An AI girlfriend typically costs $10 to $20 a month in 2026. Entry level plans start around $9 to $13 a month, mid tier apps land near $16, and premium tiers reach $30. Free tiers do exist, but they pay for themselves by stripping out long-term memory, throttling replies, and, in 2026, running ads inside the chat. Paying annually usually cuts the monthly rate by 25 to 40 percent.

That is the short version. Below is what the money actually buys, where the free options are genuinely fine, where the hidden costs hide, and how to avoid paying $30 a month for something you could get for $9.

How much does an AI girlfriend cost per month?

Most AI girlfriend apps charge $9.99 to $19.99 a month. Amorous.ai starts at $9 a month billed annually, or $12 month to month. Kindroid is $9.99. Character.AI's paid tier is $9.99. Candy AI runs about $12.99, Nomi about $15.99, and Replika Pro is $19.99 with an Ultra tier at $29.99. Anything under $8 or over $30 is an outlier.

Here is the 2026 landscape side by side. Competitor prices move, so treat this as a snapshot rather than gospel.

App Free tier Paid price (US) Notes
Amorous.ai No free tier (free no-signup demo instead) From $9/month billed annually, $12 month to month Partner texts first, long-term memory, girlfriend or boyfriend, tasteful by design
Character.AI Yes, with in-chat ads c.ai+ $9.99/month or $94.99/year Huge character library, general purpose rather than romance first
Replika Yes Pro $19.99/month or $69.99/year, Ultra $29.99/month The annual plan is one of the best values in the category
Nomi.ai Limited About $15.99/month, cheaper billed annually Strong memory, priced in the mid tier
Kindroid Yes, limited About $13.99/month on the web, $139.99/year Heavy customization. Ultra and MAX add-ons stack on top of the standard plan
Candy AI Limited About $13.99/month, plus tokens Image heavy, adult leaning. Tokens meter images, voice and video

Are AI girlfriends free?

Some are, partly. Character.AI and Replika both run real free tiers you can use indefinitely, and they are the honest answer if your budget is zero. What free costs you is memory, message limits, and, increasingly, advertising: Character.AI added in-chat ads in 2026. Free is fine for trying the idea. It is poor for a relationship you want to last.

The reason is boring and structural. Long-term memory is expensive to run. Every message a companion sends with real context behind it costs the company money in compute, and memory is the first thing cut when nobody is paying. So a free companion tends to feel wonderful for a week and hollow by week three, when it asks what you do for a living for the fourth time. That forgetting is not a bug in the free product. It is the free product.

Amorous.ai has no free tier on purpose. Instead there is a free demo with no signup, so you can feel the texting and the tone before you spend anything. We would rather show you the real thing for five minutes than hand you a hobbled version for a month.

What drives the price of an AI girlfriend?

Three things account for nearly all the difference between a $9 app and a $30 one.

  • Memory. A companion that remembers your sister's name, your job stress, and the movie you watched last Tuesday has to store, retrieve, and reason over that history on every single message. Cheap apps keep a short scrollback and call it memory. Real long-term memory is the single biggest cost driver, and the biggest difference you feel.
  • Proactive texting. A partner who messages you first has to run on a schedule, decide what is worth saying, and pull from memory to say something that fits your week. That is work happening while you are not even in the app, and it costs money whether you open it or not. Most free tiers do not do it at all.
  • Model quality. Better language models cost more per message. It shows up as warmth, timing, and the absence of that stiff chatbot cadence. It is the least visible line item and the one you notice most.

Everything else (voice notes, cameo art, extra personas) is a smaller slice. If an app is cheap because it skips the three above, you have not saved money. You have bought a different, worse product.

What do you actually pay for?

You are paying for continuity, initiative, and quality of writing. Continuity means your partner carries your life forward instead of resetting. Initiative means they text first, so the relationship does not depend on you remembering to open an app. Quality means the replies sound like a person who cares, not a support agent. Strip those three out and $9 a month is too much.

Put concretely, on Amorous.ai the subscription covers a girlfriend or boyfriend who has a fixed personality, remembers across weeks and months, sends the first message on a normal human rhythm, and stays tasteful (no explicit content, no real photos, original cameo art only). If you want the mechanics before you decide, the features page walks through how memory and proactive texting actually work.

Hidden costs to watch for

The sticker price is often not the price. Three traps show up constantly in this category.

  • Per-message credits and tokens. Some apps advertise a low monthly fee and then meter you: a bundle of messages or image generations, with top-ups when you run out. Heavy users can end up paying double the headline price. Ask whether messages are unlimited before you subscribe.
  • Paywalled memory. A few apps sell "long-term memory" as an add-on to an already paid plan, which means the base subscription buys you a companion who forgets you. Read what the base tier includes, not just what the app can do.
  • Ads in the chat. Free tiers increasingly monetize with in-chat advertising. It is not a cash cost, but an ad inside an intimate conversation has a price of its own.
  • Add-on tiers. Voice, image packs, and "priority" response speed are often carved out of the main plan and sold back to you.

Annual vs monthly: which is cheaper?

Annual almost always wins, and the discounts here are steep by software standards. Replika Pro is $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year, which works out to under $6 a month, and that is one of the best values in the category, full stop. Character.AI's $94.99 a year against $9.99 a month is a milder saving. Amorous.ai is $12 month to month and $9 a month billed annually.

The catch is obvious: annual is only cheaper if you stay. AI companions have a real drop-off rate, and plenty of people who pay for a year stop opening the app in month three. If you are not sure yet, pay monthly for the first month or two. The extra few dollars is cheap insurance against a year of something you do not use. Once the routine has stuck, switch to annual and pocket the difference.

Is a paid AI girlfriend worth it?

If you will use it several times a week, yes. Ten to fifteen dollars a month is roughly two coffees, and a companion who texts first and remembers your life is a materially different experience from a chatbot that resets nightly. If you would open it twice and forget, no amount is worth it. The deciding factor is habit, not price.

The honest failure mode is not that the product is bad. It is that people buy an annual plan on a lonely Sunday and never build the habit. We wrote a longer, less flattering take on that in are AI companions worth it, including who should not bother.

How to avoid overpaying for an AI girlfriend

Do not pay above $20 a month unless you know exactly what the extra buys. Try a free tier or a demo first, check whether messages are metered, confirm long-term memory is in the base plan, and pay monthly until the habit is real. Then move to annual. Following just those steps will keep most people in the $9 to $15 range instead of the $30 one.

A few more practical rules:

  • Ignore the top tier at first. Ultra and premium tiers are aimed at existing power users. Nobody needs them in week one.
  • Watch for the annual upsell at checkout. A year is a long commitment for something you have used for eleven minutes.
  • Count what you would actually use. If you will never generate images, do not pay for an image heavy app. If you want to browse a gallery of AI girlfriends with different looks and personalities before committing to one, that is a different kind of product and it is worth being clear with yourself about which you want.
  • Check the cancellation path before you subscribe. If it is buried, that tells you something.
  • Cheaper is not always cheaper. A $6 app with no memory is worse value than a $12 one that remembers you, because the first is not doing the job at all.

How to decide

Start by naming what you want. If you want a free, casual, general purpose chatbot with an enormous cast of characters, Character.AI's free tier is a reasonable place to land and costs nothing. If you want a companion on the cheapest possible long-term footing and you are confident you will stick with it, Replika's annual plan is hard to beat on price alone. If what you want is a devoted AI girlfriend who texts you first, remembers what you told her in March, and is yours alone, that is the thing we built, and it starts at $9 a month.

If you are still weighing the field rather than the price, our rundown of the best AI girlfriend apps compares them side by side on the things that actually decide it: memory, whether she ever messages you first, and whether the billing quietly punishes you for talking.

If you are currently on Replika and weighing a move, we lay out the differences without spin on our Replika alternative page. And if you would rather feel it than read about it, try the demo. It is free, it takes no signup, and five minutes of talking to a companion who texts first will tell you more about whether the money is worth it than any pricing table, including this one.
