Character AI pricing 2026: how much does Character AI cost, and is c.ai+ worth it?

Character.AI is the largest character chat platform in the category, and unlike most of its rivals it keeps pricing refreshingly simple: one paid tier, one price, no token meter. The complication is not the price list, it is working out whether the paid tier is buying you anything you actually want.

The short answer

Character.AI costs nothing to use on its free tier and $9.99 a month for c.ai+, or $94.99 paid annually, which works out to about $7.92 a month. There are no tokens and no usage meter on top, so that flat figure is the whole price. What changed in 2026 is the free tier: it now shows mid chat ads, caps daily swipe regenerations, and pushes an in app currency called Charms for extra ones. c.ai+ mainly buys away those frictions rather than a smarter companion. Prices checked July 2026.

What makes them feel real

Character AI pricing, the way it should feel

One price, no tokens

c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year and that is the whole cost. Nothing on Character.AI is metered by tokens, which is rarer in this category than you would think.

What the free tier lost

The 2026 free plan added mid chat ads, a daily swipe cap and a Charms currency for extra regenerations. Most of what you pay for is removing that friction.

The honest verdict

c.ai+ does not make the model smarter or unlock restricted content. Whether $9.99 is worth it comes down to how many hours a week you spend in chat.

Character.AI pricing by plan

Character.AI runs a two plan structure with no usage metering. The free tier is genuinely usable but now carries ads and a daily swipe cap; c.ai+ removes both and adds priority access.

Plan Effective monthly Billed What you get
Free $0 Nothing Full character library, basic models, session memory, up to 5 pinned memories per chat, plus mid chat ads, a daily swipe cap and peak hour queuing
c.ai+ monthly $9.99 Each month No ads, the newer premium model, priority at peak hours, unlimited voice calls, unlimited swipes, enhanced memory and chat customization
c.ai+ annual About $7.92 $94.99 up front Identical c.ai+ features for roughly 20 percent less than paying monthly
Charms Optional top up Bought in packs In app currency free users spend on extra swipe regenerations. c.ai+ subscribers do not need them and earn bonus Charms

Checked July 2026. Character.AI prices in local currency, so the figure you see varies by country and can sit meaningfully above or below the US rate. Nothing here is metered by usage: unlike Candy AI, there is no token balance for images or voice, so $9.99 really is the ceiling on a US monthly plan.

How much does Character AI cost?

Character.AI costs $9.99 a month for c.ai+, or $94.99 if you pay for a year up front, which comes to about $7.92 a month and saves roughly 20 percent. The free tier costs nothing and stays available indefinitely. Those were the US rates in July 2026.

What makes this simpler than most of the category is what is missing from the bill. There is no token balance, no per image charge and no voice minute meter, so a c.ai+ subscriber pays $9.99 and nothing else. Candy AI, by contrast, advertises about $12.99 a month and then meters images and voice separately, which is why active users there commonly land between $25 and $60. One caveat on Character.AI: billing runs in local currency, so the price genuinely differs by country, and reviewers have logged rates from under $4 to over $13 a month depending on where the account sits.

Is Character AI free?

Yes, and the free tier is more generous than most rivals. You get the full character library, character creation, basic AI models, memory within a session and up to five pinned memories per chat. You can hold long conversations without ever paying, which is why the platform grew as fast as it did.

The free experience got noticeably worse in 2026, though. Full screen ads now interrupt chats, swipe regenerations run against a daily cap, and going past that cap means spending Charms, the in app currency. At peak hours free users also sit behind queuing while paid users go first. None of that locks the product away, it just adds friction, and removing that friction is most of what your $9.99 is actually buying.

What do you get with Character AI Plus?

c.ai+ removes the ads, drops the swipe cap so you can regenerate replies without spending Charms, puts you ahead of free users in the queue at busy times, and gives you unlimited voice calls, enhanced memory, chat customization, access to the newer premium model, a subscriber only forum and early access to new features. Subscribers also earn bonus Charms.

It is worth knowing what is not on that list. c.ai+ does not remove Character.AI's content filter, does not unlock adult roleplay, and does not give you a fundamentally different companion. Several of the perks are also stronger in the mobile app than on the web, so a desktop first user gets a narrower version of the deal than the marketing suggests. Read it as a comfort upgrade, not a capability upgrade.

Is Character AI Plus worth it?

It is worth it if you are in chat most days and the ads, queuing and swipe cap are actively annoying you. At $7.92 a month on the annual plan it is one of the cheapest paid tiers in the category, and for a heavy roleplayer the removal of the daily regeneration cap alone justifies it. That is a real, specific benefit with a clear price on it.

It is not worth it if you were hoping the paid model would think noticeably better or write with more range. Community testing through 2026 has been fairly consistent that the premium model performs comparably to the free ones for most roleplay, and the sentiment turned more skeptical after features were retired without replacement. The clean test before you subscribe: list the things that frustrate you, and check how many are ads, waiting or swipe limits. If most of them are about how well the AI understands you or how much it remembers between conversations, c.ai+ will not fix that, and a different product will.

How does Character AI pricing compare to other AI companion apps?

On sticker price Character.AI is at the cheap end. c.ai+ at $9.99 a month sits below Nomi at about $15.99 and Replika Pro at $19.99, level with Kindroid's entry tier, and below Candy AI once you count the tokens Candy adds on top. On the annual term at about $7.92 a month, only Replika Pro's annual rate of roughly $5.83 undercuts it.

Price is the wrong axis for most of these decisions, though, because these products are not the same thing. Character.AI is a library of thousands of characters you switch between, built for roleplay and variety. Replika, Nomi and Amorous.ai are single companion products built for continuity, where the point is one relationship that deepens. If you want breadth, Character.AI is excellent value. If you want a partner who remembers your job, your friends and last week's argument, and who texts you first instead of waiting to be opened, that is a different product: Amorous.ai runs $12 month to month or $9 billed annually, flat, with unlimited conversation, durable long term memory and nothing metered. Questions about your character ai pricing

There is no time limited trial of c.ai+, because there does not need to be one. The free tier is permanent and gives you the full character library and unlimited text chat, so you can evaluate the writing quality for as long as you like before deciding whether the paid conveniences are worth $9.99.
Yes. c.ai+ is a rolling subscription and cancels through whichever store you bought it in, the App Store, Google Play or the web checkout. Access continues to the end of the period you already paid for, then the account reverts to the free tier with your characters and chat history intact.
No. c.ai+ does not unlock adult content or relax Character.AI's moderation in any way. The filter applies identically to free and paying users, and no subscription tier changes that. Anyone subscribing specifically to get around it will be disappointed.
Character.AI bills in local currency and adjusts pricing by market, so the same c.ai+ subscription can cost well under $4 a month in some countries and over $13 in others. The $9.99 and $94.99 figures on this page are the US rates as of July 2026.
Only marginally. Subscribers get access to the newer premium model and enhanced memory, but repeated community comparisons through 2026 found the paid model writes at a similar level to the free ones for typical roleplay. Buy c.ai+ for the ads, queues and swipe cap, not for a step change in intelligence.
The annual plan at $94.99 is the cheapest legitimate route, working out near $7.92 a month against $9.99 monthly, a saving of about $25 a year. There is no cheaper tier below that, no student pricing and no bundled discount, so the only real decision is monthly flexibility against the annual saving.
