How much does Character AI cost?

Character.AI costs $9.99 a month for c.ai+, or $94.99 if you pay for a year up front, which comes to about $7.92 a month and saves roughly 20 percent. The free tier costs nothing and stays available indefinitely. Those are the US rates on Apple's store as of October 12, 2026. A cheaper plan, c.ai lite, starts at $4.99 a month according to the help center; it gives a daily amount of messages on the premium chat styles (DeepSqueak and LongSqueak) and drops back to the free style when the allowance runs out, resetting the next day.

What still makes c.ai+ simpler than most of the category is what is missing from the bill. There is no token balance, no per image charge and no voice minute meter, so a c.ai+ subscriber pays $9.99 and nothing else unless they choose to buy Charms. Candy AI, by contrast, advertises about $13.99 a month and then meters images and voice separately, which is why active users there commonly land between $25 and $60. Janitor AI splits the difference in a third direction: the site itself is free, janitor+ is $12.99 a month, and premium models are then billed per token from a wallet on top. One caveat on Character.AI: billing runs in local currency, so the price genuinely differs by country, and reviewers have logged rates from under $4 to over $13 a month depending on where the account sits.

Is Character AI free?

Yes, and the free tier is more generous than most rivals. You get the full character library, character creation, basic AI models, memory within a session and up to five pinned memories per chat. You can hold long conversations without ever paying, which is why the platform grew as fast as it did.

The free experience got noticeably worse in 2026, though. Full screen ads now interrupt chats, swipe regenerations run against a daily cap, and going past that cap means spending Charms, the in app currency. At peak hours free users also sit behind queuing while paid users go first. None of that locks the product away, it just adds friction, and removing that friction is most of what your $9.99 is actually buying.

What do you get with Character AI Plus?

c.ai+ removes the ads, drops the swipe cap so you can regenerate replies without spending Charms, puts you ahead of free users in the queue at busy times, and gives you unlimited voice calls, enhanced memory, chat customization, access to the newer premium model, a subscriber only forum and early access to new features. Subscribers also earn bonus Charms.

It is worth knowing what is not on that list. c.ai+ does not remove Character.AI's content filter, does not unlock adult roleplay, and does not give you a fundamentally different companion. Several of the perks are also stronger in the mobile app than on the web, so a desktop first user gets a narrower version of the deal than the marketing suggests. Read it as a comfort upgrade, not a capability upgrade.

Is Character AI Plus worth it?

The clean test before you subscribe: list the things that frustrate you, and check how many are ads, waiting or swipe limits. If you are on the premium styles for more than a short session a day, lite will keep handing you back to the free model.

The subscription is also not required. Character.AI still allows unlimited messaging on the free tier in 2026, with mid chat ads, slower generation at peak times and swipe regenerations that draw on an in app currency. The subscription removes those frictions rather than unlocking a different product.

What are Character AI Charms and do you have to buy them?

You do not have to buy them, but you can. Apple's US store lists six Charms packs for Character.AI, from a $0.99 Starter Pack through $2.99, $4.99, $9.99 and $24.99 to a $49.99 Extra Extra Large Pack. The help center Charms FAQ, updated October 4, 2026, still says that "in the future, you'll also be able to purchase Charms", so the store is ahead of the documentation. The same FAQ says Charms are not redeemable for money and that Character.AI may discontinue them at any time with or without notice, which is the main reason not to buy a large pack in advance.

How do you cancel a Character AI subscription?

Cancel it in the same place you bought it, which is the single most common thing people get wrong. If you subscribed on the Character.AI website, the Help Center directs you to manage the subscription through your Customer Portal. If you subscribed inside the iOS or Android app, the billing relationship is with Apple or Google, so it has to be cancelled in App Store or Play Store subscription settings.

Cancelling in the wrong place does nothing to the charge. Removing the app, deleting your account or emailing support will not stop a store managed subscription from renewing, because the store is the one billing you, not Character.AI. The annual plan is the one to watch. At $94.99 it renews as a single yearly charge rather than a monthly one, so a subscription you stopped using in month three does not announce itself again until month twelve. If you take the annual discount, set a reminder a week before the renewal date.

Price is the wrong axis for most of these decisions, though, because these products are not the same thing.
