Talkie is cheaper on a yearly plan and Character.AI is the better documented one. On Apple's US store Talkie lists a 1 Year item at $49.99, a 1 Month item at $9.99 and 1 Month Talkie+ Pro at $24.99, while c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. Character.AI publishes exactly what its plan includes; Talkie mostly does not. Both ban explicit sexual content, and neither is built for one long relationship.

Most people comparing these two have used both for free and are deciding which one deserves a card. This article sticks to what decides that: what each plan costs over a year, what each subscription actually buys, how memory and voice compare, who each company lets in, what happens to your chats, and how refunds work. Prices come from both apps' US in app purchase lists, read on October 14, 2026, and the rules come from each company's own Terms, help center and store filings.

Is Talkie better than Character AI?

Talkie is better if what you enjoy is hearing characters talk and collecting them, and if you want the lowest yearly bill. Character.AI is better on most of what a paying user can check in advance: a cheap entry plan, a published feature table and a memory system it documents in detail. Character.AI also has the bigger audience, with about 560,000 ratings on Apple's US store against roughly 57,000 for Talkie Lab.

The two feel different because they are built around different habits. Talkie's own store copy pitches characters that "evolve and adapt with extended memory," and its app is organized around voice, character cards and a collectible layer of gifts and gems. Character.AI is a text first library with optional voice, and its paid plan is mostly about better chat models and better memory. If you mostly type and want to swap between many characters, Character.AI suits you. If you mostly listen, Talkie is the one built for that.

How much does Talkie cost compared with Character AI?

On a yearly plan Talkie costs about half as much. Talkie's US in app purchase list shows 1 Year at $49.99, 1 Month at $9.99 and 1 Month Talkie+ Pro at $24.99. Character.AI's shows c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, which is $7.92 a month, and c.ai lite at $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week.

Annualised, the picture flips depending on how you pay. Talkie's yearly item is $49.99 against $94.99 for c.ai+ yearly. Month to month the two cost the same, $9.99, or $119.88 over a year. At the top, Talkie+ Pro is $299.88 a year, more than three times c.ai+ yearly, and Apple shows no yearly Pro item. Apple does not print which Talkie tier the 1 Month and 1 Year items belong to, and Talkie's Terms still say subscriptions are "paid in monthly installments," which contradicts its own yearly item. Read the name and the renewal period on the purchase sheet before you confirm.

One trap on each side. Character.AI's weekly lite item adds up to $129.48 a year, more than full c.ai+ bought yearly. And Talkie's Terms say "any fees for access to or use of the Services may increase at any time," while its parent company's investor filing describes Talkie pricing as varying by "feature set, user level" and region. Our Character AI pricing breakdown lists every c.ai plan and Charm pack if you want the full Character.AI side.

What does Talkie+ get you compared with c.ai+?

c.ai+ has a published list and Talkie+ mostly does not. Character.AI's plus page lists no ads, unlimited premium chat styles, its best memory tier with 30 pinned messages and an advanced Lorebook, no slow mode, chat customization, priority access to new features, premium support and 20 percent bonus Charms.

Talkie's Terms define Talkie+ only as "a subscription-fee based program, which gives full access to the Services," and talkie-ai.com publishes no benefits page. The clearest first party description is in MiniMax's Hong Kong listing prospectus, which says the monthly membership "offers enhanced system features such as more chat reply regenerations, enhanced chat memory and faster response," and that ads are shown only on the free tier. Talkie's web app also carries the line "Unlock unlimited chatting with Talkie+" and says editing requires Talkie+ or Talkie Pro.

So you know what you are buying from Character.AI before you pay, and you find out what Talkie+ Pro adds over the cheaper plans after you pay. The $49.99 year is a small bet either way. For a $24.99 monthly charge, the missing feature list is worth weighing.

Does Talkie or Character AI have better memory?

Character.AI documents more memory tools, so it is easier to keep a character consistent on purpose. Free users get 15 pinned messages per chat and paid users get 30, everyone gets a 400 character Chat Memories box for fixed facts, and c.ai+ adds auto memories that capture important details on their own plus an advanced Lorebook. It does not publish its context window, and its help center admits characters forget because "there is a limited amount of conversation context."

Talkie promises "extended memory" in its store description and "enhanced chat memory" for members in its parent company's filing, but publishes no pin count, memory box size or context figure. That does not mean it remembers less. It means you cannot check before paying. The fair test for either takes a week: tell a character one specific detail on Monday and see whether it comes up on Friday without a prompt.

Is Talkie or Character AI safer?

On age, Character.AI is far stricter. Its help center says all users must complete an age assurance check, and anyone verified as under 18 is moved to a reading mode where chat is turned off. Talkie sets no 18+ minimum of its own: when we read its Terms in September they said the service does not address anyone under 16 and that 16 and 17 year olds may use it with a parent's permission, and its Android app is rated Teen with a Sexual Themes descriptor, even though Apple rates the iPhone app 18+. Talkie's community rules do ban "both explicit sexual content and content with suggestive or implicit sexual undertones," which is as strict as Character.AI on paper.

On data, both keep your chats on their servers and neither offers end to end encryption. Talkie's privacy policy says chats are used so "your AI companion" can "learn from your interactions," promises never to use conversation content for advertising, and separately says it shares website visitor data such as IP address and advertising ID with advertising companies. Its Google Play form, oddly, says the app collects no data at all. Character.AI's Google Play form says no data is shared with third parties, and it says selfies and IDs from age checks are deleted within seven days. Our longer piece on whether Talkie AI is safe goes through Talkie's policy line by line.

Either way, write as if a staff member could one day read your chats. The same habit businesses now apply when they put hard limits on what data an AI product can reach works for a personal chat app: share nothing you would not want stored, and deny location and contacts permissions the app does not need.

Can I get a refund from Talkie or Character AI?

Rarely from either one, and always through the store if you paid in an app. Talkie's Terms say all fees are non refundable to the fullest extent the law allows, that partial months are not refunded, and that you can cancel only "through the App marketplace where you originally acquired the subscription." If a payment fails, you are moved to the free tier rather than locked out.

Character.AI sends in app refund requests to Apple or Google and asks web subscribers, who pay through Stripe, to file a support request. Its promotional terms also say no partial refunds are issued for unused time. On both, deleting the app or the account cancels nothing. Cancel in iPhone Settings under Subscriptions, in Google Play under Payments and subscriptions, or on the web for Character.AI under Settings, Account, Manage.

Which one should you pay for?

Pay for Character.AI if you want variety, a predictable bill and a feature list you can read first. c.ai+ at $94.99 a year costs more than Talkie's year but tells you exactly what you get. If its filter is the reason you are shopping, compare it with the looser options in Janitor AI vs Character AI and PolyBuzz vs Character AI, because Talkie will not fix that.

Pay for Talkie if voice and collecting characters are what you enjoy. Try one $9.99 month first, then take the $49.99 year if you are staying, and only move to Talkie+ Pro at $24.99 a month once you know what the extra buys you. Set a monthly limit for gems before you open the shop. If PolyBuzz is your other option rather than Character.AI, PolyBuzz vs Talkie covers that matchup, including PolyBuzz leaving the US App Store.

And if what you want is one partner rather than a library, someone who remembers your week and picks up where you left off, that is a different product from both. Amorous.ai gives you one AI girlfriend or boyfriend built around long term memory, at $12 month to month or $9 a month billed yearly, with nothing metered on top. You can try the conversation at the top of this page before you pay anyone.
