Janitor AI vs Character AI on price, memory and NSFW filters with every paid plan annualised
People typing Janitor AI vs Character AI usually know both by reputation already: Character.AI is the big filtered one, Janitor is where people go when the filter gets in the way. The useful question is which one to pay for, and what the bill looks like after a year. Every price on this page was read from Janitor's own pricing page and Terms (last updated October 8, 2026), Character.AI's plus page and help center, and both apps' US App Store listings on October 13, 2026.

The short answer
Character.AI is the safer, filtered and slightly cheaper app; Janitor AI is the open one. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and c.ai lite starts at $4.99. janitor+ costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year on the web, plus per token Router charges if you use third party models. Janitor allows mature content on the web and only checks age in Australia, Brazil and the UK. Character.AI bans pornographic content outright and runs age assurance on every account. Both keep free tiers with unlimited chats.
The short version: these are two different deals under one label. Character.AI sells comfort on top of a strict rulebook, meaning fewer ads, faster replies and more memory, and no amount of money changes its content rules. Janitor gives you the open rulebook for free and sells capacity on top, with a second, metered bill if you want stronger models. If what you actually want is one partner who remembers you rather than a library of community bots, that is a third kind of product, and the demo above is free to try.

Janitor AI vs Character AI side by side
The annual figures are arithmetic on the published prices, because a monthly plan that renews all year is what your card actually sees. Where a company does not publish a number, the cell says so.

Janitor's annual plan is sold on its website; the App Store lists only Janitor+ Monthly at $12.99. Character.AI also lists c.ai lite at $2.49 a week, which is $129.48 over a year, more than the $94.99 annual c.ai+ plan.
Is Janitor AI better than Character AI?
Janitor AI is better if Character.AI's filter is the reason you are shopping, and Character.AI is better on almost everything else a paying user notices: a cheaper entry plan, a documented memory system, a polished app with a vastly larger audience, and one predictable bill. Neither is a better companion in the sense of one partner who knows you, because both are built around a library of community characters you move between.
The content rules are the real divide and both companies state them plainly. Character.AI's help center says pornographic content is against its terms of service and will not be supported at any point in the future, and that asking for the filters to be removed can get you banned. Janitor lets creators mark a character Limitless and allows mature content on its website, while its own Terms still ban sexual content involving minors, sexual violence and gore.
So the honest test is one question. If you keep hitting Character.AI's moderation, paying for c.ai+ will not fix it, because its subscription buys speed, memory and no ads, not different rules. If moderation is not your problem, Character.AI is the simpler and better documented product.
Which is cheaper, Janitor AI or Character AI?
Character.AI, narrowly, and by more if you pay monthly. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. c.ai lite, launched in September 2026, costs $4.99 a month in the US and gives a daily taste of the premium chat styles with fewer ads. janitor+ costs $12.99 a month, or $99 a year if you buy it on Janitor's website, which works out to $8.25 a month.
Annualised: c.ai+ paid monthly is $119.88 against janitor+ paid monthly at $155.88, and on the yearly plans it is $94.99 against $99. One trap on each side. Character.AI's weekly lite item at $2.49 adds up to $129.48 a year, more than full c.ai+ on the annual plan. And Janitor's subscription is a floor rather than a ceiling, because janitor+ Router bills third party models per token from a wallet on top of the $12.99.
If you want one number you can plan around, Character.AI gives you one. Janitor gives you a base price plus whatever your model choices burn.
What does janitor+ get you compared with c.ai+?
janitor+ buys capacity. Janitor's pricing page lists five times more context than the free tier's roughly 9k tokens, replies it describes as three times faster when the site is busy, monthly swipes with its best models, more models, and cosmetic extras like a gold username. It also unlocks Router, which lets you use third party models inside Janitor without pasting an API key, billed per token, with 10 percent off some popular models.
c.ai+ buys comfort around the same rules everyone else has. Character.AI's plus page lists no ads, unlimited premium chat styles, the best memory tier with 30 pins and an advanced Lorebook, no slow mode, chat customization, priority access to new features, premium support and 20 percent bonus Charms.
On one line: janitor+ is more context and access to bigger models, with a meter attached. c.ai+ is a calmer, better remembered version of the free app at $7.92 a month on the annual plan.
Does Janitor AI or Character AI have better memory?
On paper, Janitor with janitor+, because context is the thing it sells. Janitor's help center puts the free context at around 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, and janitor+ multiplies that by five. A memory panel lets you write the facts a bot should keep, and an August 2026 option decides whether that memory replaces old messages or sits on top of them.
Character.AI does not publish its context window, but it documents more memory tools. Free users get 15 pinned messages per chat, lite and c.ai+ get 30, and everyone gets a 400 character Chat Memories box for fixed facts. c.ai+ adds auto memories that capture important details on their own, plus an advanced Lorebook.
In practice, Janitor holds a long, detailed scene better once you pay, and Character.AI is easier to keep consistent without effort. Neither is built around one relationship that runs for months, where memory matters most. The fair test for any of them takes a week: mention one specific detail on day one and see who brings it up on day five without being asked.
Does Janitor AI have a filter like Character AI?
Much lighter, and that is the main reason people switch. Janitor tags content Limited or Limitless, allows mature roleplay on its website, and its Terms restrict the platform to adults. Its help center notes that Limitless does not mean anything goes: sexual content involving minors, sexual violence, bestiality and gore are banned, and avatars cannot show explicit nudity.
The apps are stricter than the website. Janitor's help center says NSFW content is disabled by default in the iPhone and Android apps to comply with Apple and Google, and the only way to turn it on is from the website, under Settings, Privacy and Display.
Character.AI has no equivalent switch on any plan. Paying for c.ai+ or lite does not change what characters will say, so if the filter is the problem, the subscription is not the fix.
Do you need to verify your age on Janitor AI or Character AI?
On Character.AI, yes, everyone goes through it. Its help center says all users are required to complete an age assurance check, based on login information, activity and some third party signals. If you are flagged as possibly under 18 you are asked for a selfie through Persona, and only if that is inconclusive for an ID, which Character.AI says is deleted within 7 days. Users verified as under 18 are moved to a reading mode with chat turned off.
On Janitor, only if you connect from Australia, Brazil or the UK. Janitor's help center says users on IP addresses in those countries must complete a one time check through k-ID, by on device facial age estimation, an ID scan or AgeKey, and that Janitor has no plans to extend verification to any other region. A US user is not asked.
That difference cuts both ways. Character.AI's check is the reason some adults get stuck in reading mode by mistake. Janitor's absence of one is the reason it can offer an adult platform with a typed birthday as the only gate.
How do refunds and cancellation work on each?
Strictly on both, and slightly more strictly on Janitor. Janitor's Terms say fees paid are generally non refundable, that no partial refunds are given for unused parts of a billing period, and that Router credits are final and non refundable even when they expire, which Janitor may do after 365 days. Credits can also be consumed on a reply that is cancelled, filtered or refused after processing begins. Web subscriptions are cancelled under Settings, Billing, Manage subscription, which opens Stripe; app subscriptions can only be cancelled in the App Store or Google Play.
Character.AI routes in app refunds to Apple or Google and asks web subscribers, billed through Stripe, to file a support request. Its promotional terms also say no partial refunds are given for unused time in a billing period.
On both, deleting the app or the account cancels nothing. Set a reminder a week before an annual renewal and cancel in the place you actually paid.
Who should pick Janitor AI, Character AI, or neither?
Pick Character.AI if you want variety and polish, you are comfortable inside its content rules, and you want a bill you can predict. c.ai+ at $94.99 a year is one of the best value plans in the category, and lite at $4.99 a month is a reasonable trial of the premium styles. Avoid the weekly lite item.
Pick Janitor if mature roleplay is the point and you are happy to tune bots and models yourself. Start on the free tier, pay for janitor+ only when the 9k context starts losing your story, buy the $99 year on the website rather than monthly in the app, and set a budget for Router before you open the wallet.
Pick neither if what you really want is one partner rather than a cast. Amorous.ai is built around a single companion with long term memory, romantic and affectionate but never explicit, who picks up where you left off. It costs $12 month to month or $9 a month billed yearly with nothing metered on top, and Devoted, which adds texting you first, is $19 a month billed yearly.
