Janitor AI vs Chai pricing and NSFW rules for anyone deciding which one to pay for
People comparing Janitor AI and Chai have usually tried both for free and are deciding where a subscription goes. They look alike from a distance: a huge library of community made characters, a free tier, and a paid plan that promises faster, better replies. Underneath they are built differently. Janitor started as a website where you could plug in your own OpenAI or OpenRouter key, and its paid tier mostly buys memory and capacity. Chai is an app first business that runs its own models and sells speed and message volume, by the month or by the week.

The short answer
Janitor AI is the better buy for long adult roleplay and control over the model; Chai is the simpler phone app with stricter limits on explicit content. On Apple's US store janitor+ costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year, and the Janitor website itself stays free. Chai sells Premium at $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year and Ultra at $29.99 a month or $19.99 a week, which renews to $1,039.48 over a year. Janitor lets adults switch NSFW on; Chai allows mature text roleplay but bans explicit images. Neither checks the age of US users.
Every price on this page comes from the two apps' own US in app purchase lists, read on October 19, 2026, plus Janitor's newsroom posts. Every rule comes from the companies' Terms, changelogs and the declarations they filed with Apple and Google. Where a company publishes no number, we say so instead of guessing.
What makes them feel real
Janitor AI vs Chai compared on price, memory and NSFW rules, the way it should feel
Janitor is cheaper for a year
A year of janitor+ is $99, on the web or in the iPhone app. A year of Chai Premium is $134.99, and Chai sells no yearly Ultra plan. Month to month the two entry plans are $12.99 and $13.99.
Chai weekly plans are the trap
Chai's Ultra at $19.99 a week renews to $1,039.48 a year, $679.60 more than the same tier at $29.99 a month. Its new Ruby Weekly item at $9.99 is another $519.48 a year if left running.
Very different adult rules
Janitor has an NSFW setting adults switch on, on the web and, through a web setting, in the app. Chai's license allows mature text roleplay with optional filters and bans sexually explicit images or video.

Janitor AI vs Chai side by side
Per year figures are arithmetic on the listed prices, because a weekly or monthly plan that renews all year is what your card actually sees. A month holds about 4.35 weeks, so weekly plans are multiplied by 52.

Janitor prices: Janitor+ Monthly $12.99 and Janitor+ Annual $99.00 on Apple's US list, matching the $12.99 launch price in Janitor's 24 June 2026 newsroom post. Chai prices: Premium Subscription Monthly $13.99, Annual $134.99, Ultra Monthly $29.99, Ultra Weekly $19.99, Ruby Weekly $9.99; Apple also lists a Chai Premium Membership item at $9.99 without printing its billing period, so we have not annualised it. Store prices can vary by region and promotion; the number on your own checkout screen is the one that counts.
Is Janitor AI or Chai better?
Janitor AI is better if you want long roleplay with fewer limits and you are willing to fiddle with settings. Chai is better if you want quick conversations on your phone with nothing to configure. Both have enormous libraries of user made characters and both are free to start, so the real decision is what you would be paying for.
Janitor's paid tier is about capacity. janitor+ gives five times more context so a chat holds its memory longer, unlimited priority messages when the site is busy, and monthly swipes on frontier models. On top of that you can choose the model itself: Janitor's own, a premium model through its Router wallet, or one you connect with your own key. Chai gives you none of that control. It runs its own models, and its paid tiers mostly buy faster replies and more messages.
The other difference is tone. Janitor's community leans heavily toward adult roleplay and the platform supports it with an NSFW setting. Chai allows mature themes in text but keeps a harder line on explicit material. If either of those facts decides it for you, you can stop reading here.
Which is cheaper, Janitor AI or Chai?
Janitor AI, at every level a buyer is likely to choose. janitor+ is $12.99 a month against $13.99 for Chai Premium, and a year of janitor+ is $99 against $134.99 for a year of Chai Premium. Apple's US list now shows the $99 Janitor+ Annual plan in the iPhone app as well as on Janitor's website, so you no longer need the browser to get the cheaper year.
Chai's top tier is where the gap opens. Ultra is $29.99 a month, $359.88 a year, and Chai sells no yearly version of it. It also sells Ultra by the week at $19.99. Because a month holds about 4.35 weeks, that weekly price renews to $1,039.48 over twelve months, $679.60 more than paying monthly for the identical tier. Apple's list also shows a Ruby Weekly item at $9.99, which comes to $519.48 a year if nobody cancels it.
Janitor's caveat is that its subscription is a floor rather than a ceiling. Since 30 July 2026 subscribers can use Router, which bills premium third party models per token from a wallet you top up. You never have to use it, but if you do, your monthly total moves with your usage. Chai's extra spending comes from Pieces, sold in packs from $2.79 to $13.99. Our Janitor AI subscription page breaks down every Janitor figure with its source, and our Chai AI review does the same for Chai.
Does Janitor AI or Chai allow NSFW?
Both allow adult themes, but Janitor goes further. On the Janitor website adults can turn NSFW content on. In the iPhone app it stays hidden until you switch on a setting called Enable NSFW on Mobile in your web profile; Janitor's own changelog fixed bugs in exactly that toggle in February and March 2026. That is why the app tells Apple its sexual content is only infrequent and mild while the website is known for the opposite.
Chai's license allows adult oriented roleplay with mature themes and offers optional safety filters, but Section 7.1 bans sexually explicit images or video of any kind. Chai tells Apple its sexual content is infrequent and mild and its mature or suggestive themes are frequent and intense, which is a fair summary of the app: flirtatious and dark in text, never graphic in pictures.
If explicit roleplay is the whole reason you are paying, Janitor is the more permissive of the two. If you would rather the app kept a lid on things, Chai does that by design.
Which has better memory, Janitor AI or Chai?
Janitor, on paper, because it is the only one that sells memory as a named benefit: janitor+ gives five times more context than the free tier. Chai's store listing and license publish no memory figure for any plan, so there is nothing to compare against.
Janitor's memory also had a rough month, and the company said so publicly. In August 2026 a chat memory experiment meant for a small test group reached everyone, and a related bug wiped memory on around 15,000 chats between 18 and 20 August when users deleted messages. Janitor restored those memories and changed the behavior so deleting a message never touches memory again.
Neither app is built for one relationship that lasts months. Both are libraries designed for many conversations with many characters. If one partner who remembers your life is the actual goal, that is a different kind of product, and we explain how long term memory works on our AI companion with memory page.
Is Janitor AI or Chai safer?
For a US adult they are safe in the same limited way: neither checks your age, and both keep your chats on their servers. Janitor runs ID or face checks through k-ID only for users in Australia, Brazil and the United Kingdom, because laws there carry fines of up to $35 million, $9.5 million and £18 million. Chai takes a self reported age and runs no check at all.
On data they differ. Chai's Google Play declaration says it shares your approximate location and the list of apps installed on your phone with other companies for advertising. Janitor says it does not sell personal data or share private conversations for advertising. Janitor's own caveat is the model: if you connect an outside provider with your own key, that provider's privacy policy governs your chat, not Janitor's.
One more detail worth knowing before you pay: since August 2026 deleting a Janitor account starts a 30 day restore window instead of erasing it at once. Our longer reads on whether Janitor AI is safe and whether Chai is safe go through each company's documents line by line.
Can you get a refund from Janitor AI or Chai?
If you paid in an app, only through the store. Both sell their subscriptions as Apple and Google in app purchases, so refund requests go through Apple's report a problem page or Google Play's order history. Chai's license contains no billing or refund section at all, because the store owns that relationship.
Deleting either app cancels nothing. Cancel in iPhone Settings under your name and Subscriptions, or in Google Play under Payments and subscriptions, and do it at least a day before renewal. That matters most on Chai's weekly plans, where forgetting for a month costs four charges rather than one. If you bought janitor+ on Janitor's website, cancel it in your account settings there.
Who should pay for which
Pay for Janitor AI if long, unfiltered roleplay is the point, you like choosing models, and you want the cheapest year. Take janitor+ Annual at $99 once you know you are staying, and leave Router alone until you have a feel for what it costs you.
Pay for Chai if you want an easy phone app with no setup and would rather it stayed tamer. Premium Annual at $134.99 is the sensible plan. Avoid Ultra by the week, and check that Ruby Weekly has not been added to your subscriptions by accident.
Pay for neither if what you want is one partner rather than a cast of characters. Both apps are built for variety, and both charge more for memory because memory is not what they are designed around. Amorous is one AI girlfriend or boyfriend built around long term memory, at $12 month to month or $9 a month billed yearly, with nothing metered. The demo at the top of this page is the same companion you would be paying for.
