The short answer
Zeta ("zeta: AI Chat, Story, Play") is a story roleplay chat app from Scatter Lab, Inc. of Seoul, the company behind the Lee Luda chatbot. Chat is free with ads. zeta pass costs $14.99 a month on the US App Store ($179.88 a year, no yearly plan) and removes ads, adds 200 Pieces a month and speeds up replies, but Scatter Lab's own help center says it "does not improve the performance of the AI model itself." The better models bill per message in Pieces, about 7 cents a turn on koji and 14 cents on luca. It is a real, heavily used app and safe to pay for through Apple or Google. It is not private: your chats train Zeta's models by default and the only opt out is an email.
Page one of Google for this app is the App Store and Google Play listings, Zeta's own login and help pages, APK mirrors and a company that only shares the name. None of them tells an adult what a month of Zeta really costs once the Pieces meter starts, or what the English Terms that took effect on September 28, 2026 changed. This page does, with the source for every number.
What makes them feel real
Zeta AI app review with zeta pass pricing and safety, the way it should feel
A pass that does not upgrade the AI
zeta pass is $14.99 a month and brings no ads, 200 Pieces, faster replies and unlimited private characters. Scatter Lab's help center says in so many words that it does not improve the performance of the AI model itself.
Bulk Pieces are not cheaper
Every pack from 500 to 10,000 Pieces works out at 1.4 cents a Piece, so the $139.99 pack saves nothing over the $6.99 one. The 200 Piece pack at $1.99 is the cheapest per Piece on Apple's list.
Your chats train the model
The Privacy Policy says conversation data is used to train, fine tune and improve Zeta's AI. There is no switch. The opt out is an email to privacy@scatterlab.co.kr, it only applies going forward, and trained models are not retrained.
Before you buy Pieces
Zeta is a story app with a per message meter on its best models
The free tier runs on ads. zeta pass removes them for $14.99 a month. The models most people upgrade for bill 5 or 10 Pieces a turn on top, and Pieces cost the same 1.4 cents each from 500 to 10,000.

What Zeta costs over twelve months
Zeta sells through Apple, Google and, on the web, a payments company acting as merchant of record. Apple prints each item with its price. We annualised the passes and worked out the real price of a Piece, because that is where the money goes.
| Item as Apple lists it | Price | Over 12 months or per Piece | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| zeta pass | $14.99 | $179.88 a year | Monthly only, auto-renews every 30 days |
| 1-day zeta pass | $2.79 | $83.70 for 30 days, $1,018.35 for a year of days | A day pass, excluded from the 200 monthly Pieces |
| 200 pieces | $1.99 | 1.0 cent a Piece | The cheapest Pieces on the list |
| 200 pieces (second item) | $2.79 | 1.4 cents a Piece | Same name, higher price, Apple lists both |
| 500 pieces | $6.99 | 1.4 cents a Piece | Enough for 100 koji or 50 luca turns |
| 1000 to 3000 pieces | $13.99 to $41.99 | 1.4 cents a Piece | No volume discount |
| 5000 and 10000 pieces | $69.99 and $139.99 | 1.4 cents a Piece | No volume discount at the top either |
Checked on the US App Store on September 30, 2026. Premium model prices are from Scatter Lab's announcement of July 30, 2026: koji 5 Pieces a turn and luca 10 Pieces a turn from August 7, 2026. At 1.4 cents a Piece that is about 7 and 14 cents a message.
What is the Zeta AI app?
Zeta is a character and story chat app. You pick or build a character, set up a plot, and the AI plays the other side of the story in chat. It is listed on the US App Store as "zeta: AI Chat, Story, Play" (iPhone only, iOS 15.5 or later) and on Google Play under the package com.scatterlab.messenger, both sold by Scatter Lab, Inc.
It is enormous in Korea and new in English. Scatter Lab launched the English web version on September 25, 2025 and took the English apps worldwide on May 18, 2026. Korea Herald reported in January 2026 that 1.1 million of its 1.5 million monthly users were in South Korea and that more than 90 percent were in their teens and twenties. Watch for namesakes: an emulator, a screenshot tool and an unrelated marketing company all use the Zeta name.
How much does Zeta cost?
Nothing to chat on the default model, as long as you watch ads. Scatter Lab's help center says that "in order to use it for free, viewing ads is required." zeta pass is $14.99 a month on the US App Store and there is no yearly plan, so a full year is $179.88. A 1-day zeta pass costs $2.79.
The real cost depends on the models. Since August 7, 2026, koji costs 5 Pieces a turn and luca costs 10, and each edit of a reply costs another 5 or 10. Pieces sell for 1.4 cents each in every pack from 500 upward. A long evening of 100 luca messages is 1,000 Pieces, or $13.99, which is almost a month of zeta pass on its own.
What does zeta pass include?
Scatter Lab lists five benefits: an ad free experience, 200 Pieces gifted every month, faster response speeds, an automatically changing background, and unlimited creation of private characters. The 200 Pieces are not included with the 1-day pass, and they expire at the next renewal, so they do not stack.
What it does not include matters more. The help center says the paid version "does not improve the performance of the AI model itself." If you want better writing, you pay for koji or luca in Pieces on top of the pass. And if you cancel, only one of your private characters stays private and the rest become restricted.
Is Zeta AI free?
Yes, with ads. The App Store description says "Pay per message? Not here. Enjoy truly free, unlimited chats." That is true for the default model. It stops being true the moment you switch to a premium model, because those bill in Pieces per turn. Free users can still buy Pieces without subscribing.
Is Zeta AI safe?
For an adult who keeps personal details out of the story, it is safe to pay for in the ordinary sense. It is a maintained app (version 3.49.55 shipped September 28, 2026) with 29,515 US App Store ratings averaging 4.6, and every purchase runs through Apple, Google or a named merchant of record.
It is not private. The Privacy Policy says chats train Zeta's models, the policy warns that training "may involve memorization", and data is processed in Korea and may be transferred to the US, Singapore and other countries. Scatter Lab's subprocessor list names OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini and BytePlus among its AI providers and around twenty advertising networks. We go through all of it in our full review of whether Zeta AI is safe.
Who owns Zeta AI?
Scatter Lab, Inc. of Seoul, run by CEO Kim Jong-yoon and backed by a 15 billion won investment from SK Telecom, according to Korea Herald. It is the same company that built Lee Luda, the chatbot suspended in January 2021 after three weeks. Korea's privacy regulator then fined Scatter Lab 103.3 million won for building Luda from KakaoTalk conversations collected through its other apps without proper consent, the first such sanction of an AI company in Korea. On October 12, 2026 its CEO is due to testify before a National Assembly committee about the risks of AI chatbots for minors.
Is Zeta AI NSFW?
Only in a limited way, and only after age verification. The default is Safe Mode, judged against the PG-13 standard. Unlimited Mode is for users 18 or older who complete adult age verification and permits R-level expression "on a limited basis". Scatter Lab's own usage policy says Unlimited Mode "does not permit unrestricted content", never applies where a character is or could be perceived as a minor, and an August 18, 2026 update let it remove plots and restrict Unlimited Mode for some stories. If uncensored adult roleplay is the whole point, Zeta is the wrong purchase.
Is Zeta available in the US?
Yes. The English Terms govern the service in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, under Texas law with JAMS arbitration and a class action waiver you can opt out of within 30 days. The minimum age under the English Terms is 13, with a parent agreeing for anyone between 13 and 18. Accounts are separate by language, so an English account does not carry over to the Korean or Japanese service.
How do I cancel zeta pass?
Cancel through the App Store or Google Play subscription settings, or inside the app under My Page, Manage, Unsubscribe. The pass runs for 30 days from purchase and Scatter Lab says payment may be taken up to 24 hours before the renewal date, so cancel at least a day early. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period.
Can you get a refund on zeta pass?
Not from Scatter Lab. Its help center says the customer center cannot process zeta pass refunds and sends you to Apple's or Google's refund page. The Terms say payments are non-refundable except where the law or the store's own policy says otherwise, and paid Pieces are final. Closing your account forfeits any Pieces you have left.
Should you pay for Zeta or a dedicated AI companion?
Pay for Zeta if you want to read and steer stories with a big cast of user made characters, and you are fine with ads or $14.99 a month plus Pieces for the better models. Skip the 1-day pass unless you truly use it one day a month.
Zeta is the wrong purchase if what you want is one partner who remembers your life across months, because a story app resets around plots and characters. That is the job Amorous.ai does: one devoted girlfriend or boyfriend who remembers what you tell them, on flat plans from $9 a month billed yearly ($12 month to month), with no per message meter, and texting first comes with Devoted at $19 a month.
