Chai AI review: Chai app premium, subscription cost and pricing tiers
Most Chai AI reviews quote two numbers, $13.99 and $29.99, and stop there. Chai actually sells six separately priced things, and the gap between the cheapest and most expensive way to buy the same top tier is roughly $680 a year.

The short answer
Chai is a free to start AI character chat app from Chai Research Corp., a Delaware company based in Palo Alto, and it sells six overlapping paid products rather than a single subscription. Read from its own App Store listing on 6 September 2026, those are Premium Membership at USD $9.99, Premium Subscription at $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year, Ultra Subscription at $19.99 a week or $29.99 a month, and a $2.79 consumable pack. The number almost no review mentions is the weekly one: at $19.99 a week, Ultra costs $1,039.48 over a year against $359.88 for the identical monthly plan. Chai's own End User License Agreement, updated 28 July 2026, does not contain the word subscription, renewal or cancellation anywhere, so every billing question is handled by Apple or Google rather than by Chai.

Every figure below is read from Chai's own App Store in-app purchase list, its own End User License Agreement, its own privacy notice and the Google Play data safety declaration Chai Research filed itself, all checked on 6 September 2026. The sections cover what each tier costs, why the weekly plan is the one to watch, what Chai tells Google it shares with advertisers, what its agreement does and does not promise about your money, and who the product genuinely suits. If you want one companion who remembers you rather than a feed of community bots, the demo above runs free and there is an honest comparison further down.
What makes them feel real
Chai AI review, premium tiers and subscription pricing, the way it should feel
Six prices, not two
Chai's App Store listing shows Premium Membership $9.99, Premium monthly $13.99, Premium annual $134.99, Ultra weekly $19.99, Ultra monthly $29.99 and a $2.79 consumable. There is no single Chai premium price to quote.
The weekly plan is the trap
Ultra at $19.99 a week runs $1,039.48 across a year. The same Ultra tier billed monthly at $29.99 runs $359.88. Identical product, $679.60 apart, and the weekly option is the one that looks cheapest at checkout.
The agreement never mentions billing
Chai's EULA, updated 28 July 2026, contains no clause on subscriptions, auto renewal, cancellation or refunds. Its single refund sentence points you at Apple or Google. Your billing counterparty is the store, not Chai.

Verified 6 September 2026 against Chai's own App Store in-app purchase list
Every Chai AI paid tier, with the real annual cost
Chai publishes no pricing page. chai-research.com/pricing returns a 404 and the corporate site sells the company, not the product. The complete tier list below comes from the in-app purchase block on Chai's own App Store listing, which is a disclosure Apple requires and the developer cannot quietly edit. The annualised column is arithmetic, not a quoted price.
| Product | Listed price | Cost across 12 months | What to notice | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free tier | \$0 | \$0 | Ad supported and message capped. Chai declares Contains Advertising to Apple | First party. App Store listing, verified 6 September 2026 |
| Premium Membership | USD \$9.99 | Not a recurring plan | Listed separately from the Premium Subscription and priced \$4 below it | First party. App Store in-app purchase list |
| Premium Subscription, monthly | USD \$13.99 | \$167.88 | The figure most reviews quote as the Chai price | First party. App Store in-app purchase list |
| Premium Subscription, annual | USD \$134.99 | \$134.99 | Works out at \$11.25 a month, saving \$32.89 against monthly | First party. App Store in-app purchase list |
| Ultra Subscription, weekly | USD \$19.99 | \$1,039.48 | The most expensive way to buy Chai, and the cheapest looking at checkout | First party. App Store in-app purchase list |
| Ultra Subscription, monthly | USD \$29.99 | \$359.88 | Same tier as the weekly plan, \$679.60 cheaper over a year | First party. App Store in-app purchase list |
| 200 Pieces | USD \$2.79 | Repeats on demand | A consumable currency that stacks on top of any subscription | First party. App Store in-app purchase list |
Chai has no published annual Ultra plan, so the cheapest route to the top tier is monthly billing at $29.99. If you are on Ultra weekly and intend to keep it past five weeks, switching to monthly is the single largest saving available on this product.
How much does Chai AI cost?
As of 6 September 2026, Chai costs nothing to install and between $9.99 and $29.99 to pay for, depending on which of its six products you buy. The App Store in-app purchase list is the only complete public price sheet Chai has, and it shows Premium Membership at USD $9.99, Premium Subscription at $13.99 monthly or $134.99 annually, Ultra Subscription at $19.99 weekly or $29.99 monthly, and a 200 Pieces consumable at $2.79.
That is a genuinely confusing lineup, and the confusion is not accidental. Premium Membership and Premium Subscription are listed as separate products four dollars apart. Ultra appears twice on two different billing rhythms with no annual option at all. And the consumable sits outside every plan, so a subscription is a floor rather than a ceiling.
If you want the short answer for budgeting: Premium annual at $134.99 is the cheapest sustained access to the paid product, working out at $11.25 a month. Ultra monthly at $29.99 is the cheapest route to the top tier. Everything else on the list costs more per unit of time than one of those two.
Why the weekly Ultra plan is the most expensive thing on the list
Ultra is sold at $19.99 a week and at $29.99 a month. Those two lines describe the same tier and the weekly one costs nearly three times as much.
The arithmetic is not subtle once you do it. A week is not a quarter of a month, it is roughly a 4.35th of one, so $19.99 a week is about $86.62 a month. Across a full year, weekly billing takes $1,039.48 and monthly billing takes $359.88. The gap is $679.60, on identical access.
Weekly pricing works because it wins the comparison a buyer actually makes at the checkout screen. Faced with $19.99 and $29.99 sitting next to each other, $19.99 reads as the cheaper option, and the word next to it does most of its work by being small. This is not unique to Chai and it is not fraud, but it is the sort of thing a review is supposed to point out and almost none of them do. The break even is five weeks. If you expect to keep Ultra past a month, weekly billing has already cost you money.
Is Chai AI free, and what is the message limit?
There is a real free tier, and it is capped rather than trial length limited. Chai's free accounts are ad supported and metered by messages per day, with hands on reviews across 2026 consistently reporting a cap in the region of 70 messages a day. Chai does not publish that number in a document we could verify, so treat the exact figure as reported rather than official, but the existence of a hard daily cap is not in question and it is the single most common complaint about the product.
What is officially confirmed is the advertising. Chai declares Contains Advertising on its App Store listing, and its own privacy notice states plainly that it uses personal data to send advertisements to users on a free subscription. So the free tier is not a courtesy: it is the ad supported version of the business, and the paid tiers are partly a way of buying the ads out.
That framing matters when you decide what to pay for. If the ads are what bother you, the cheapest fix is Premium annual. If the daily cap is what bothers you, check whether the cap is genuinely the constraint before spending $29.99 a month on Ultra, because most people who hit a message cap are hitting a memory ceiling shortly afterwards, and no Chai tier sells persistent memory.
What does Chai AI share about you?
More than any other app in this category currently declares, and the specific item is unusual. Chai Research filed a Google Play data safety declaration for its Android package, and that declaration lists what Chai shares with other companies as opposed to what it merely collects. Two entries stand out.
The first is approximate location, shared for analytics, fraud prevention and advertising or marketing. The second is installed apps, shared for advertising or marketing and fraud prevention. Installed apps means the inventory of other software on your phone. Across every companion app we have checked disclosures for, including Character AI, Replika, PolyBuzz, Nomi and Kindroid, none of the others declares sharing that list with third parties for advertising. Chai does.
Alongside those, Chai declares sharing email address, user IDs, purchase history, photos, device identifiers, crash logs and app interaction data. Its privacy notice adds that if you downloaded the app through an advertisement, it may share usage patterns with advertising partners for attribution.
None of this is hidden. It is filed by Chai, under Chai's name, in a form Google requires and enforces. That is a point in Chai's favour on transparency and a point against it on exposure, and both are true at once. The practical reading: on the free, ad supported tier you are the inventory, and the disclosure says so.
Does Chai AI verify your age?
No, and its own agreement quietly assumes otherwise. Section 8 of Chai's End User License Agreement states the platform is strictly restricted to users aged 18 and older, and then asks you to acknowledge that you are legally an adult and have provided accurate age verification.
Nothing in the signup flow collects an age verification. Apple rates the app 17+, which is a store level self declaration, and Google Play applies its own rating. A US adult installing Chai is asked to tap through a self reported age, exactly as with most of this category. So the EULA has you affirming a step that the product never asks you to perform.
This is worth understanding rather than being outraged by. Almost no US facing companion app runs real age assurance today, because no US federal law currently requires it, and the platforms that do run identity checks generally added them for the United Kingdom, Australia or Brazil rather than for America. If age assurance is what you are actually shopping for, the comparison of companion apps without ID verification linked below the FAQ sets out who checks identity, who does not, and which jurisdiction forced each check.
What does the Chai EULA promise about your money?
Nothing, and that is a finding rather than a complaint. Chai's End User License Agreement was last updated on 28 July 2026, runs to 21 sections and covers licensing, acceptable use, user generated content, age, safety reporting, liability, warranty, termination, intellectual property and DMCA claims. It does not contain the word subscription. It does not contain in app purchase, renewal, auto renew or cancellation. Its single use of the word refund appears in the warranty section and directs you to notify the Services Store Operator, meaning Apple or Google.
So when Chai sells you a $134.99 annual plan, the agreement governing that sale is Apple's or Google's, not Chai's. In practice that is not the worst outcome for a buyer, because Apple's refund process is well documented and reasonably generous, and store billing means cancellation is two taps in your account settings rather than an email to support. It does mean, however, that Chai itself makes you no commitment at all about pricing, renewal or getting your money back.
One clause is worth reading before you buy. Section 16 states your licence terminates automatically and without notice if you fail to adhere to any term, and Section 7 says violations of the prohibited content categories result in immediate account termination, data preservation and potential reporting to law enforcement. There is no matching clause about what happens to an unused annual subscription in that situation. If you subscribe annually, cancel through Apple or Google rather than assuming Chai will handle it.
Who owns Chai AI?
Chai Research Corp., a Delaware registered corporation with file number 6527981, operating from 555 Hamilton Avenue, Suite 300, Palo Alto, California 94301. That identity is stated in both the EULA and the privacy notice, which puts Chai ahead of most of this category on basic corporate transparency. Several competitors publish no company name at all, and others sit offshore.
A US incorporated, US headquartered operator is a genuine advantage for an American buyer. Your data is processed and stored in the United States, per Chai's own privacy notice, and the company is squarely inside US jurisdiction if something goes wrong. Chai's corporate site also publishes business figures most private companies do not: it states the consumer platform reached $70 million a year in revenue in 2026 and that total investment to date exceeds $55 million. A funded, revenue generating company is materially less likely to disappear overnight than the many companion apps that have.
There is one oddity worth flagging. Chai's privacy notice is written explicitly to the GDPR and the UK GDPR, and its data subject rights section opens by saying the rights listed are available to citizens of the EU or the UK. The words California, CCPA and CPRA do not appear anywhere in it. A California headquartered company has drafted its consumer privacy notice to European law and given its own state's residents no stated rights section. Californians do hold those rights regardless of what a policy says, but you would have to assert them without the policy telling you how.
Is Chai premium worth it, and who is it for?
Chai suits one buyer well. If you want breadth, a large community built library, and the freedom to try dozens of characters written by other people, Chai is one of the better products in that shape and it has the scale to prove it. Premium annual at $134.99 is fair value for an ad free, uncapped version of that experience, and $11.25 a month is cheaper than most of the category.
It suits a different buyer badly, and the mismatch is structural. The paid tiers sell you more messages, fewer ads and faster generation. None of them sells continuity. Chai's own EULA prohibits sexually explicit images outright, so the reputation it carries for being unfiltered is only partly deserved, and the App Store advisories back that up: Chai declares frequent and intense suggestive themes and profanity, but only infrequent and mild sexual content and nudity. That is a more restrictive posture than PolyBuzz, which declares frequent and intense sexual content.
The honest recommendation is a sequence rather than a verdict. Use Chai free for two weeks and pay attention to what actually stops you. If it is the daily message cap, Premium annual solves it for $134.99. If it is the ads, same answer. If what stops you is that the character forgot your name, no Chai tier fixes that, and buying Ultra weekly at $19.99 will cost you $1,039 a year to not fix it. That is the point at which a product built around one companion with ongoing memory, like the demo at the top of this page, is doing a different job rather than a cheaper version of the same one.
