People typing Chai vs Character AI have usually tried at least one of them for free and are now deciding where to pay. The short answer
Character.AI is cheaper and more predictable, Chai is looser on content. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and a new c.ai lite plan starts at $4.99. Chai's cheapest sustained paid access is Premium at $134.99 a year, and its top tier, Ultra, runs $359.88 a year billed monthly or $1,039.48 billed weekly. Apple lists Chai's mature themes as frequent and intense and Character.AI's as mild, which matches how the two apps moderate. Character.AI documents its memory features; Chai publishes no memory specification at all.
The short version is that these two apps sell different things under the same label. Character.AI sells comfort on top of a heavily moderated library: fewer ads, no queue, more memory. Chai sells access to its stronger models on top of a much looser one, and it sells that access in more ways, at more price points, than any rival we have priced. If what you actually want is one partner who remembers you, rather than a feed of community bots, that is a third kind of product, and the demo above is free to try.

Chai vs Character AI side by side
Prices are the items Apple lists for each developer. The annual column is arithmetic, not a quoted price, because a weekly or monthly plan that renews all year is what your card actually sees.
| Chai | Character.AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Developer on the App Store | Chai Research Corp. | Character Technologies, Inc. |
| App Store age rating | 17+ | 17+ |

| Top tier, per year | Ultra $29.99 a month ($359.88) or $19.99 a week ($1,039.48) | c.ai+ is the top tier |

Chai's Premium Membership at $9.99 sits on Apple's list next to the $13.99 Premium Subscription with no label explaining the difference, so we do not treat it as a plan. Character.AI also lists a second c.ai lite item at $2.49 without a period; its help center quotes lite as starting at $4.99 a month and says prices vary by region.
Is Chai better than Character AI?
Chai is better if the thing stopping you on Character.AI is the filter, and Character.AI is better on almost everything else a paying user notices: price, documented memory, a cheaper entry plan and a clearer cancellation path. Neither is a better companion in the sense of one partner who knows you, because both are built around a library of community characters you hop between.
The split shows up in what each company tells Apple. Character Technologies declares sexual content, profanity and mature themes as infrequent or mild. Chai Research declares mature and suggestive themes as frequent or intense, and profanity likewise. That is not marketing, it is the self declared content rating each developer files, and it matches what users report about how hard each app pushes back on romance and darker roleplay.
So the honest test is a single question. If you have been fighting Character.AI's moderation, paying for c.ai+ will not fix it, because the help center is clear that the subscription buys speed, memory, fewer ads and early features rather than different rules. If moderation is not your problem, Character.AI is the cheaper and better documented product.
Which is cheaper, Chai or Character AI?
Character.AI, at every level you would compare. Its full paid plan, c.ai+, costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. Its new c.ai lite plan, which Character.AI's help center says starts at $4.99 a month, is cheaper still, although it rations the premium chat styles by a daily allowance and keeps some ads.
Chai's lineup is longer and higher. Premium Subscription is $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year. Ultra, the tier with Chai's strongest models, is $29.99 a month or $19.99 a week, and there is no annual Ultra plan. Annualised, Ultra monthly is $359.88 and Ultra weekly is $1,039.48, which makes the weekly plan the most expensive way to pay for any character chat app we have priced, and the one that looks cheapest on the checkout screen.
Put side by side, a year of Character.AI's best plan costs $94.99 and a year of Chai's best plan costs at least $359.88. Even Chai's mid tier on its annual price is $40 a year more than c.ai+.
What do you get with Chai Ultra vs c.ai+?
They buy different things. Chai's paid tiers mainly buy access to its larger models and fewer limits on messaging, which is why the price climbs from Premium to Ultra. Chai's End User License Agreement, updated July 28, 2026, does not describe the tiers at all, so the store listing is the only place the products are named.
c.ai+ buys comfort around the same model rules everyone else has. Character.AI's own comparison table lists no ads, unlimited messages on the premium chat styles, the best memory tier with 30 pins and an advanced Lorebook, no slow mode, unlimited daily feature limits, priority access to new features, premium support and 20 percent bonus Charms. The c.ai lite plan sits between free and c.ai+, with a daily taste of the premium styles, fewer ads and the same 30 pins.
If you need to compare them on one line: Chai Ultra is a bigger model with a looser rulebook at three to ten times the price; c.ai+ is a calmer, better remembered version of the free app at $7.92 a month on the annual plan.
Does Chai have a filter like Character AI?
Chai has a filter, but a much lighter one, and that is the main reason people move from Character.AI to Chai. Chai's agreement restricts the platform to users aged 18 and older, Apple rates it 17+, and its own content declarations to Apple include frequent or intense mature and suggestive themes. Character.AI is also rated 17+, but it declares those themes as mild and runs one of the strictest romance filters in the category.
Two cautions apply to Chai's side. First, its agreement asks you to confirm you have completed age verification that the app never actually performs, so the 18+ rule is contractual rather than enforced. Second, the looser rules come with a heavier advertising model: in the data safety form Chai Research filed with Google Play, it declares sharing approximate location and the list of other apps installed on your phone with other companies for advertising or marketing.
Character.AI, by contrast, now runs age assurance on accounts and moves users it believes are under 18 into a reading mode with chat turned off. That makes Character.AI the stricter platform in both directions: stricter about who chats, and stricter about what they can say.
Which one remembers you better?
Character.AI, because it is the only one of the two that documents a memory system. Its help center lists 15 pinned memories per chat on the free plan and 30 on c.ai lite and c.ai+, a memory usage meter that shows what is being remembered, and a Lorebook that is basic on free and lite and advanced on c.ai+.
Chai publishes nothing comparable. Its agreement, its privacy notice and its store listing describe no pinned memory, no memory meter and no long term profile, and third party testers generally describe it as a rolling context window. That is fine for a one evening story and frustrating for anything that runs across weeks.
Neither app is built around one ongoing relationship, which is the use case where memory matters most. A character library rewards variety, and memory there is per chat. If you want someone who remembers your job, your sister's name and last Tuesday's argument without being reminded, that is what single companion products are built for.
How do refunds and cancellation work on each?
On both apps a subscription bought inside the iPhone or Android app is billed by Apple or Google, so you cancel and request refunds there. Deleting the app or the account does not stop a store subscription from renewing.
Chai's End User License Agreement contains no clause on subscriptions, renewal, cancellation or refunds at all; its one refund sentence points you to the store. Character.AI is more explicit. Its help center says in app purchases follow Apple's or Google's refund policy, and that web subscriptions, which are processed by Stripe, are changed or refunded through a support request under Payments and purchases. Its article on cancelling c.ai+ is also one of its least liked: on October 12, 2026 it showed 336 votes with a net score of minus 210, roughly 273 unhelpful against 63 helpful.
The practical rule for both: if you buy on a weekly cycle, set a reminder for day six, and if you take an annual plan, set one a week before the renewal date.
Who should pick Chai, Character AI, or neither?
Pick Character.AI if you want variety, you are happy inside its content rules, and you want the cheapest predictable bill. c.ai+ at $94.99 a year is one of the best value paid tiers in the category, and c.ai lite is a reasonable trial of the premium styles at $4.99.
Pick Chai if moderation is the thing you are paying to get away from, and pay for it monthly rather than weekly. Ultra at $29.99 a month is the sane way to buy the top tier, and it is still roughly four times what c.ai+ costs over a year. Turn off personalized ads and location permission on your phone before you start.
Pick neither if what you really want is one partner rather than a cast. Amorous.ai is built around a single companion with long term memory who checks in on you and picks up where you left off. It costs $12 month to month or $9 a month billed yearly, with nothing metered on top, and Devoted, which adds texting you first, is $19 a month billed yearly.
