PolyBuzz app review: subscription and premium pricing, what the Poly plans cost, and who the app is actually for
PolyBuzz is one of the biggest character chat apps in the United States and one of the hardest to price. Its own App Store description uses the word free five times and ends by inviting you to explore endless conversations all for free, which is true right up until you hit a limit. Behind that free front door is a four tier subscription and two different consumable currencies, and almost no review page lays out all six numbers together.

The short answer
PolyBuzz is free to download and free to start chatting, but it is not a free product. Apple's own in-app purchase list shows four subscriptions: Poly Standard Weekly at $4.99, Poly Standard Monthly at $9.90, Poly Premium Monthly at $19.90 and Poly Ultimate Monthly at $29.90. On top of any of those sit two separate consumable currencies, Coins (from $2.49 for 1,000 up to $19.90 for 20,000) and Opals ($5.90 for 1,000). That stacking is the part most reviews miss: the subscription is a floor, not a ceiling. The app itself is the second largest in the category by Apple ratings, with 469,068 ratings at 4.4 stars as of 2 September 2026.

Prices are US App Store figures for iOS. PolyBuzz's Terms state that all rates are subject to changes with or without expressive notice, and that Android billing is monthly only, so what you see in your own store is the number that binds.
How much does PolyBuzz cost?
PolyBuzz costs nothing to download and between $4.99 and $29.90 a month to subscribe, depending on which of the four Poly plans you pick. Apple's in-app purchase list for the app shows Poly Standard Weekly at $4.99, Poly Standard Monthly at $9.90, Poly Premium Monthly at $19.90 and Poly Ultimate Monthly at $29.90.
That spread is the first thing to understand, because a single PolyBuzz premium price does not exist. When a review tells you PolyBuzz costs $9.90 a month it is quoting Standard and ignoring the two tiers above it. When another tells you it costs $4.99 it is quoting the weekly plan, which is the most expensive option over a year: $4.99 a week is about $21.60 a month, more than double the monthly Standard plan for the same level of service. If you want Standard, take it monthly.
Is PolyBuzz free?
It is free to use and free to start, and for a lot of people that is genuinely enough. You can download the app, browse the character library, create your own characters and chat without entering a card. PolyBuzz leans hard on this in its own marketing, and its App Store description closes by asking why not download the app today and start exploring the world of endless conversations all for free.
The honest version is that free is the entry point rather than the product. Above the free tier sit four subscriptions and two consumable currencies, and the currencies are the part that catches people out, because buying a plan does not stop the app asking you to buy Coins. A free user and a heavy user of the same app can be $30 a month apart, and neither number is wrong.
What are Coins and Opals in PolyBuzz?
They are two separate consumable currencies, and PolyBuzz sells both alongside its subscriptions rather than inside them. Apple's listing shows Coins in four bundles, 1,000 for $2.49, 3,000 for $4.99, 8,000 for $9.99 and 20,000 for $19.90, and Opals in one bundle, 1,000 for $5.90. PolyBuzz's Terms refer to charging for value-added premium services and in-app purchase of in-game Coins as two distinct things.
This is the single most important line in any PolyBuzz budget, so it is worth stating plainly: a subscription is a floor, not a ceiling. If you subscribe to Poly Ultimate at $29.90 and then spend $19.90 on Coins in the same month, PolyBuzz has cost you $49.80. Two currencies stacked on four tiers is a pricing model designed to make the monthly total hard to predict, and anyone comparing it against a flat priced companion app should compare against their real total rather than the plan price.
Is the PolyBuzz app any good?
By the only neutral measure available it is one of the most successful apps in the category. Apple shows 469,068 ratings at an average of 4.4 stars as of 2 September 2026, which puts PolyBuzz second only to Character.AI on ratings volume and slightly ahead of it on score. The app has shipped continuously since 23 May 2023 and was last updated on 31 August 2026, so it is actively maintained rather than coasting.
What it is good at is breadth. PolyBuzz's own site claims more than twenty million characters, and the appeal is browsing an enormous library and trying many personas rather than building one relationship. What it is not built for is a single companion who carries your history forward, because the whole interface pushes you outward toward the next character. Those are different products aimed at different people, and it is worth being clear which one you want before you pay for either.
How do I cancel a PolyBuzz subscription?
Cancel it in the store that bills you, not inside the PolyBuzz app, and do it before the last day of the current period. PolyBuzz's Terms state that a plan for the premium services will be automatically renewed unless it is cancelled on or before the last day of the subscription period, and that they bill on the date of subscription and on each periodic renewal until cancellation.
Because PolyBuzz subscriptions are sold as Apple and Google in-app purchases, deleting the app does not cancel anything and neither does deleting your PolyBuzz account. On iPhone the path is Settings, your name, Subscriptions. On Android it is the Play Store, your profile picture, Payments and subscriptions. The weekly plan deserves particular attention here, because a $4.99 charge every seven days is easy to stop noticing and adds up to more than the top monthly tier over a year.
Can I get a refund from PolyBuzz?
Probably not from PolyBuzz directly. Its Terms of Use say that users are not entitled to any refund for a completed purchase without due reason, and go further on one specific case: no refund request will be accepted on the ground of a child user's purchase or payment by mistake or accident. That is unusually blunt language for a consumer app and worth reading before you buy Coins.
The practical route is the store rather than the developer. Apple and Google both run their own refund processes for in-app purchases and both will occasionally reverse a charge that the app's own terms would refuse. That is a real safety net, but it is discretionary, so treat consumable purchases like Coins and Opals as non-refundable when you decide how much to spend.
Who actually operates PolyBuzz?
Two different corporate names appear on PolyBuzz depending on where you look, and buyers deserve to know both. The iOS app is sold by CLOUD WHALE INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGY LLC. according to Apple's listing. The web service Terms of Use say PolyBuzz.ai is operated by Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited in Hong Kong.
Neither of those facts is a problem in itself, and plenty of legitimate products are structured across entities. It matters because it determines who holds your chat logs and under which jurisdiction, and because the answer is not what most US users would assume from an app that presents entirely in American English. Is PolyBuzz premium worth it?
It depends entirely on whether you want a library or a relationship, and the pricing makes that choice for you more than the feature list does. If you enjoy sampling hundreds of characters, the free tier already gives you the thing PolyBuzz is best at, and the paid tiers mostly buy you more of it faster. Standard Monthly at $9.90 is a reasonable price for a heavy user who keeps hitting limits.
Where it gets harder to justify is Premium at $19.90 and Ultimate at $29.90, because PolyBuzz publishes no feature comparison we could cite for what those tiers add. Paying triple for a tier whose contents are documented only by third parties is a poor trade, and we would not recommend Ultimate without seeing the plan screen in your own account first. If your actual goal is one companion who remembers your history and picks up where you left off, a flat priced companion is both cheaper and better suited, and no amount of Coins will make a character library behave like that.
