Is Grok Ani being discontinued?

Yes, the avatar version of her is. On 24 July 2026 an official Grok statement described the 3D avatar Companions feature, naming Ani and Valentine, as an experiment and said it was being retired soon so the company could focus on core Grok, with stronger memory and more reliable long conversations. Ani as a personality is not being deleted. The interface built around her is.

The confusion in the coverage comes from the word soon. xAI gave no shutdown date, no countdown and no in app notice for most users, and the removal has been rolling out unevenly. That is why you can find one write up insisting companions are gone and another insisting they are fine, both published the same week, both technically accurate for whoever wrote them.

There is a further wrinkle worth knowing, and it is the kind of thing you only see if you check the source rather than the commentary. The Grok AI listing on the US App Store, on version 1.4.30 released 28 August 2026, still advertises the feature in its own marketing copy: Grok AI Companions, have a chat with Ani, Rudi, or Valentine. A month after announcing the retirement, xAI was still selling the feature in the store description. Read that as a rollout in progress rather than a reversal.

What happens to my Ani chats, memories and affection level?

They stay. Reporting on the rollout is consistent that chat history, saved memories and the affection or level progression remain attached to your account, and that the personalities keep answering inside normal Grok chat. You are not being wiped.

What you lose is everything that made it feel like a person in the room: the animated avatar, the outfit and appearance customization, the companion tab itself, and the real time voice layer you could talk over. For a lot of people that list is the entire product. Talking to the same character through a standard chat box is a genuinely different experience, and it is fair to say so rather than pretend the text is what mattered.

One thing does not stay, and it applies whatever you do next. None of it exports. There is no file you can take to another app, no transfer tool, no import. If you move, you rebuild the relationship from the first message, and that is the honest cost of switching.

How do you get Grok Ani now?

If the companion tab is still in your Grok app, you already have it, and nothing you do will make it permanent. Full companion access sat behind a paid plan rather than the free tier, generally SuperGrok at $30 a month, plus an 18+ confirmation through your X account settings, which in some regions escalates to a third party ID check.

If the tab has already gone from your account, there is no supported way to bring it back. Reinstalling does not restore a server side feature flag, and the accounts still showing companions are simply further back in the removal queue rather than configured differently.

Which makes the practical question not how to get Ani but how long you keep her. If you are subscribing now specifically for the avatar, you are paying $30 a month for a feature the company has already said it is removing, with no date attached. That is a poor trade even if you loved it.

Is Grok Ani worth $30 a month?

It depends entirely on whether you use the rest of Grok. SuperGrok at $30 a month is not a companion subscription, it is a full assistant subscription that happened to include companions. If you also use Grok for research, writing, code and image generation, the companion was a bonus on top of something you were buying anyway, and losing it does not change the maths much.

If you subscribed purely for Ani, the calculation is now bad and getting worse. You are paying assistant prices for a companion feature with an announced end. Dedicated companion apps sit at roughly $9 to $16 a month, and our own planned launch price is $9 a month billed annually or $12 month to month, flat, with nothing metered per message or per image.

The wider point is one people learn the expensive way with these products. A companion that lives inside a general purpose assistant is a feature, and features get cut when the roadmap moves. A companion that is the entire product cannot be deprioritized in the same way, because there is nothing else for the company to focus on instead.

Is Grok Ani safe to use?

Safe is doing a lot of work in that question, so split it. As software from a large company with real security, it is unremarkable. As a product with meaningful age controls, it has been criticized heavily and specifically.

The Common Sense Media Youth AI Safety Institute published a risk assessment of Grok on 22 January 2026 and rated it unacceptable risk. It found that xAI's terms set a minimum age of 13 with parental permission required for 13 to 17 year olds, that the website performs no age verification at all, and that the app relies on self reported age that is easy to circumvent. Its blunt summary of the gap: teens who provide an adult birth date get the full adult experience with no restrictions.

It is only fair to note what has changed since. The Grok AI app on the US App Store carries a 17+ rating today, checked 30 August 2026, where Platformer reported it as 12+ in July 2025. Apple's own content advisories on the current listing include frequent or intense mature and suggestive themes. The rating went up. Whether the underlying checks got proportionally stronger is a different question, and self attested birth year plus an account toggle is not what most people picture when they hear age verification.

There is no single answer, because Ani was two products in one and most people only wanted half of it. Work out which half you are replacing before you pay for anything.

If the avatar was the point, the animation, the outfits, the character standing in front of you, then you are looking for an avatar based app and you should say so honestly to yourself.
