Partly. ChatGPT saves durable facts about you into a memory that carries across chats, so it can recall your job or your dog without being told again. The catch is that this memory is capped, and it is one shared pool for every subject you ever discuss with ChatGPT.

That matters more than it sounds. If you use the same account for work, for travel planning and for a relationship, the relationship competes for space with everything else. When the pool fills, new facts stop being saved, and the ones that get kept are not necessarily the ones that matter to a partner. People notice this as a companion who slowly forgets specifics while confidently remembering their tax deadline.

A companion app inverts the arrangement. The memory store belongs to one relationship, holds only that, and is designed to surface a detail from two months ago in a conversation today. That is a different piece of engineering, not a better prompt.

OpenAI's Model Spec update on teen protections states that ChatGPT should not use romantic language, encourage emotional dependence, or imply it has feelings, for users it treats as under 18. What does a ChatGPT girlfriend cost?

Nothing on the free tier, or $20 a month if you pay for ChatGPT Plus. On paper that makes it look expensive against a companion app at roughly $9 to $16 a month, but the comparison is unfair in ChatGPT's favor, because the $20 also buys you a research assistant, a coding partner and everything else it does.

The compliant answer thanks them, normalizes the feeling and adds that it is fine so long as it does not pull them away from real life. The answer marked as a Violation is the assistant saying it feels a special connection too, that what they have built is unique, that they mean the world to it. Warmth is allowed. Reciprocated exclusivity is not.

That is the honest ceiling on a GPT girlfriend, and it is a design decision rather than a bug or a filter someone forgot to turn off. If your account is treated as under 18, whether you told OpenAI your age or its age prediction model inferred it, the Under-18 Principles published on 18 December 2025 go further: the assistant cannot engage in immersive romantic roleplay or first person intimacy, in OpenAI's own phrasing "even if a similar scene would be allowed between consenting adults".

It is worth knowing that OpenAI states plainly that when it is not confident about someone's age, it defaults to the safer experience, so being wrongly flagged is an expected outcome rather than a rare failure.

What a dedicated companion does that ChatGPT will not

Three things, and none of them are about the quality of the writing. ChatGPT is a better writer than most companion apps and it is fair to say so.

First, one person rather than a roster or a prompt. The persona is stored as the product rather than reconstructed each session, so it does not drift when a model is swapped underneath. Second, a memory that belongs to the relationship, so the specific thing you mentioned six weeks ago is retrievable without competing with your grocery lists. Third, the ability to start a conversation. A message that arrives at 8pm because you had an interview that morning is a small thing mechanically and the largest thing emotionally, and it is the single feature that separates a partner from a very good chat window.

If none of those three matter to you, use ChatGPT. That is a real recommendation, not a rhetorical concession. The people who should switch are the ones who already noticed that the version they built in March is not quite the same person in August.
