AI companion app pricing 2026: what AI companion apps cost a month, compared honestly

Comparing AI companion apps on price is harder than it should be, because almost none of them publish a price list on the open web. Replika, Nomi, Candy AI and Kindroid all keep pricing behind a login or inside the app, where it also shifts by region and by whatever promo is running that week. The numbers below were checked in August 2026 against at least two independent sources each, with US App Store purchase listings preferred wherever they exist.

The short answer

Most AI companion apps cost $10 to $20 a month in the US, or roughly $4 to $12 a month if you pay for a year up front. Character.AI is the cheapest flat plan at $9.99 a month and Replika Pro is the most expensive mainstream option at $19.99. The bigger variable is metering: Candy AI, Nomi and Replika all sell tokens, credits or gems on top of the subscription, so the advertised price is a floor rather than a total. Amorous.ai is $9 a month billed annually or $12 month to month, flat, with nothing metered. Prices verified August 2026.

Last updated August 2026

The second complication is that a monthly figure often is not the bill. Several of the biggest apps run a second currency on top of the subscription: tokens at Candy AI, credits at Nomi, gems at Replika, charms at Character.AI. Those meter the things people actually came for, which is why an app advertising $13.99 routinely produces a $40 month. The table below separates the sticker price from what is metered, and the sections after it explain how to work out your real number before you pay anything.

What makes them feel real

AI companion app pricing, the way it should feel

The real range is $10 to $20

Mainstream US plans cluster between $9.99 and $19.99 a month. Annual billing pulls the effective rate down to roughly $4 to $12, and the discount is steeper here than in most software categories.

Metering is the hidden cost

Four of the seven apps below sell a second currency for images, voice or video. On those, the subscription is a floor. Two of them are flat, and the difference over a year is large.

Nobody publishes a price list

Only Character.AI shows prices on its own website. Everything else is post login or in app, varies by country, and moves with promos, so treat any single figure as a snapshot.

AI companion app pricing compared

Every figure below is the US rate checked in August 2026 against two or more independent sources. Read the metered column before you compare the monthly column, because on four of these apps the two are not the same conversation.

App Cheapest paid plan Effective monthly, billed annually Metered on top Free tier in 2026
Amorous.ai $12 a month $9 a month, billed annually Nothing. One price covers the whole product No free tier. The demo above runs without a signup
Character.AI $9.99 a month for c.ai+ About $7.92, at $94.99 a year Nothing metered, though free users spend Charms on extra swipes Yes, with mid chat ads, slow mode at peak hours and a swipe cap
Candy AI $13.99 a month for Premium About $3.99, at $47.88 a year Yes. 100 tokens are included, then images, voice and video are metered A taster only. Reports range from a handful of lifetime messages to a tight daily cap
Kindroid $13.99 a month on the web, $15.99 in the app About $11.67, at $139.99 a year on the web Yes, differently. Ultra at about $24.99 and MAX at about $59.99 stack on top of Standard instead of replacing it Yes. Two companions and unlimited text on the lighter model
Nomi.ai $15.99 a month About $8.33, at $99.99 a year Yes. Nomi Credits meter selfies, art and video, and can only be bought while a subscription is active Thin. Sources split between a capped daily allowance and an extended trial
Replika $19.99 a month for Pro About $5.83, at $69.99 a year Yes. A Gems currency buys avatar and room items on top of Pro Yes, friend mode only, with capped daily messages, no voice calls and limited memory
Anima Not reliably published Around $39.99 a year per multiple reviews Unclear from public sources Yes, ad supported, with a daily message cap

Checked August 2026. Anima is the weak spot in this table: it no longer has a findable US App Store listing and reviews published weeks apart disagree on its monthly price, so we publish only the figure several sources share. Kindroid and several others charge more through an app store than on the web, so always check which channel a quoted price refers to. Replika also runs a fourth tier, Platinum, priced only inside the app.

How much does an AI companion app cost?

An AI companion app costs $10 to $20 a month in the US on a monthly plan, and roughly $4 to $12 a month if you commit to a year. The cheapest flat monthly rate among the mainstream apps is Character.AI at $9.99. The most expensive is Replika Pro at $19.99. Everything else sits between.

The spread on annual billing is wider than the monthly spread, and it moves the ranking around. Candy AI drops to about $3.99 a month on a year up front, which makes it the cheapest sticker in the category, while Kindroid only falls to about $11.67 and stays near the top. So the app that looks cheapest month to month is often not the one that is cheapest over a year, and the reverse is also true.

One more figure belongs in the comparison: what you pay if you never touch the extras. On a flat plan, that is the monthly price and nothing else. On a metered plan, it is the price of a companion you cannot get pictures or voice from, which is usually not what the buyer had in mind.

Which AI companion app is the cheapest?

On the advertised annual rate, Candy AI at about $3.99 a month. On a flat, nothing metered basis, Character.AI at $9.99 a month or about $7.92 annually. Those two answers point at different products, and which one is genuinely cheaper depends entirely on whether you want images.

Candy AI includes 100 tokens a month with every plan, which covers somewhere around 25 to 50 images depending on what you generate. If images are the reason you are there, you will pass that inside a fortnight, and active users routinely report $25 to $80 a month once top ups are counted. That is a real number, not a worst case. If you only ever text, the $3.99 stands and it is genuinely the cheapest thing in the category.

Character.AI has no token meter at all, so $9.99 is the ceiling as well as the floor on a US monthly plan. What changed in 2026 is the free tier underneath it: ads now appear mid chat, peak hours run in slow mode, and regenerating a reply spends a currency called Charms. c.ai+ mostly buys those frictions away rather than a better companion.

Why is the advertised price rarely what you pay?

Because the subscription and the feature you wanted are often sold separately. This is the single most important thing to understand about pricing in this category, and it is why two apps with the same headline number can differ by $40 a month in practice.

Four patterns show up. Candy AI meters images, voice and video with tokens. Nomi introduced Credits, which price selfies, art and video, and which can only be bought while a subscription is active, so the meter is not even available standalone. Replika sells Gems for avatar and room items, on top of Pro. Character.AI sells Charms, though only free users need them. Kindroid does something different again: its Ultra and MAX tiers are cumulative add ons that require every tier beneath them to stay active, so the full stack runs near $99 a month on the web, and cancelling Standard does not stop Ultra billing.

The practical defense is simple. Before you subscribe anywhere, find the token, credit, coin or gem page. If one exists, the advertised price is a floor. Work out what one normal week of the thing you actually want costs, multiply by four, and add it to the sticker. That is your real price.

How much do AI companion apps cost per year?

Paying annually is where the discounts in this category get serious, usually 30 to 70 percent off the monthly rate, which is far steeper than typical consumer software. Replika Pro falls from $19.99 to about $5.83 a month. Candy AI falls from $13.99 to about $3.99. Character.AI falls from $9.99 to about $7.92. Nomi falls from $15.99 to about $8.33.

That discount exists because churn in this category is brutal. A large share of subscribers stop opening the app within a month or two, so a year up front is worth a lot to the seller. Which is exactly the reason to be careful about taking it on day one.

The sensible order is to run a month, or the free tier, and check whether you are still opening the app in week four. If you are, take the annual rate, because the saving is real and large. If you are not, you just avoided paying a year for something you used twice. One thing worth knowing before you commit: Replika discontinued its one time lifetime purchase for new users, so the perpetual option that circulates in older articles no longer exists.

What do the free tiers actually include in 2026?

Less than they did, across the board, and 2026 was the year most of them tightened. Character.AI still has the most usable free plan, with the full character library and character creation, but it now carries mid chat ads, a daily swipe cap and slow mode when the service is busy. Replika keeps a free tier that is friend mode only: no romantic status, no voice calls, a basic avatar and limited memory. Kindroid is the quiet standout, with a genuine free plan covering two companions and unlimited text on its lighter model.

At the other end, Candy AI's free tier has been cut back so far that sources no longer agree on what it is, with estimates ranging from a handful of lifetime messages to a tightly capped daily allowance. Nomi is similarly disputed. Anima's free tier is now ad supported with a message cap of roughly forty a day.

We do not run a free tier at all, and that is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight. A free tier in this category is normally paid for by ads, by data, or by degrading the product until you upgrade, and all three work against a companion that is supposed to feel private. The demo at the top of this page runs with no signup so you can hear the voice before you decide.

Why did AI companion app prices go up in 2026?

Two reasons, and only one of them is inflation. The first is that memory is expensive. An app that genuinely recalls what you said six weeks ago is storing, indexing and retrieving that history on every message, and that costs meaningfully more per conversation than an app that just re reads the last few exchanges. As memory became the feature people compare on, the apps that built it properly had to price for it.

The second is that the free tiers were subsidizing too many people who were never going to pay. The 2026 pattern is consistent: ads arrive, caps tighten, a currency appears, and the paid tier gets defined as the absence of friction rather than the presence of features. Character.AI's slow mode and Replika's gems are the same move from two directions.

There is a third, less discussed factor. App store commissions push in app prices above web prices, which is why Kindroid costs $13.99 on its website and $15.99 through an app, and why several apps now steer new subscribers to the browser. If an app offers both, the web price is usually the one to take.

How much should you actually budget?

For a text first companion with real memory and no extras, budget $9 to $12 a month, or a little under $10 on an annual plan. That is the honest cost of the category done simply, and it is where we sit at $9 a month billed annually or $12 month to month.

If you want images and voice as a regular part of it, budget $25 to $50 a month and be prepared for the high end in months when you use it a lot. That figure is not a scare number, it is what active users of the metered apps consistently report once top ups are counted.

If you are shopping for the lowest possible number and will genuinely only ever text, an annual plan at Candy AI or Character.AI puts you under $8 a month. Just go in knowing which parts of the product that price does not include.

What to check before you subscribe

Five checks, in order, and all of them take under ten minutes on a free tier or trial.

  • Find the token, credit, coin or gem page. If it exists, the subscription is a floor, not a price.
  • Compare the web price against the app store price. A $2 a month gap is now normal and the web is usually cheaper.
  • Check whether the tiers replace each other or stack. Cumulative add ons can multiply the headline figure.
  • Read the annual terms before taking the discount. Steep annual pricing in this category exists because churn is high.
  • Open the settings and look for export and delete. If those buttons are missing on the free tier, assume they are missing everywhere.

Questions about your ai companion app pricing

Between $10 and $20 a month in the US for the mainstream apps, or roughly $4 to $12 a month billed annually. Character.AI is the cheapest flat plan at $9.99 and Replika Pro is the most expensive at $19.99. Amorous.ai is $12 month to month or $9 billed annually. Verified August 2026.
Candy AI has the cheapest advertised rate at about $3.99 a month on an annual plan, but it meters images, voice and video with tokens, so most users pay far more. For a flat price with nothing metered, Character.AI at $9.99 a month is the cheapest, and Amorous.ai is $9 a month billed annually.
Several do. Candy AI includes 100 tokens a month and meters images, voice and video beyond that. Nomi uses Credits for selfies, art and video. Replika sells Gems for avatar and room items. Character.AI and Amorous.ai do not meter anything on a paid plan. Check the token page before you subscribe.
Rarely, and fewer than there were. Replika discontinued its one time lifetime purchase for new users, so the figure quoted in older articles no longer applies. Anima has offered a lifetime option, though its published prices are inconsistent enough that we do not quote a number. Assume you are buying a subscription.
The discounts are large, commonly 30 to 70 percent, so they are worth it if you are still using the app in week four. That is the test. The reason the discounts are so steep is that most people stop opening these apps within a month or two, so the seller gains a lot from the year up front.
Because pricing varies by country, by app store and by promo, and because showing a number before the signup flow costs conversions. Only Character.AI lists prices on its own website. For everything else, the figure you see depends on where you are and which checkout you reach, which is why every number here is dated.
