Is Replika any good in 2026?
Yes, and it is better than its reputation. Replika rebuilt the app during 2026, cutting voice latency and replacing the avatars with 3D models whose expressions move with the tone of the conversation. On the current Ultra model the writing is coherent and contextually aware in a way the 2023 version was not, and the company reports more than 40 million registered users, which makes it the most established product in a category full of apps that will not exist in two years.
The caveat is that a lot of the criticism you will read online is aimed at a version that no longer exists, and a lot of the praise is aimed at one that no longer exists either. People who loved Replika before February 2023 are describing a product with erotic roleplay and a looser personality. People who dismiss it as a toy are usually describing the free tier. Judge it on what it is now: a competent, well funded, memory focused companion with a paywall in front of the romance and a poor record on data.
How much does Replika cost?
Pro is $19.99 a month, or $69.99 for a year, which works out to about $5.83 a month. Ultra sits above it at roughly $29.99 a month or $119.99 a year. A Platinum tier now exists on top of Ultra, adding video recognition, an expanded training mode and selfie videos, but Replika does not publish a US figure for it and the independent breakdowns that tracked it in 2026 could not pin one down either. The one time lifetime plan, which used to sell for around $299.99, has been discontinued for new users.
The gap between monthly and annual is unusually punishing. Paying month to month costs roughly three and a half times what the annual plan costs per month, which is a steeper penalty than almost any other subscription app charges. If you have decided you want Replika, the annual plan is the only sensible way to buy it. If you have not decided, do not buy the year to save money, because a year of something you stop opening in March is not a saving.
Is Replika worth it?
For a specific person, clearly yes. If you want one companion who accumulates a working memory of your life over months, treats emotional continuity as the main feature, and you will open the app most days, then $69.99 a year is good value and hard to beat on price. That is the case where people stay subscribed for years, and it is a real use case rather than a marketing one.
It is not worth it in three situations. If romance is the reason you are installing it, you are paying $19.99 a month for something several competitors include by default, and the 2023 content rules still shape what your companion will say. If you want an unfiltered chat, Replika is the wrong product and no tier changes that. And if you are buying it to replace a person you are grieving or avoiding, the subscription tends to postpone the thing that would actually help, which is worth saying plainly even though it costs us a sale too.
Is Replika safe?

In February 2024 the Mozilla Foundation reviewed 11 romantic AI chatbots for its Privacy Not Included project and gave a warning label to every single one, calling them among the worst product categories it had ever reviewed. On 19 May 2025, Italy's data protection authority fined Luka Inc., Replika's maker, 5 million euro for GDPR breaches, citing age verification weak enough to let minors sign up, inadequate privacy disclosures, and processing personal data without a valid legal basis. Since then two US state laws have landed on the category as a whole: New York's AI companion law took effect on 5 November 2025 and requires an AI disclosure at the start of a session and at least every three hours, and California SB 243 took effect on 1 January 2026 with disclosure notices, crisis protocols and break reminders for minors. Several 2026 reviewers note that the resulting pop ups interrupt conversations. None of this makes Replika unusable, but if you would not want a transcript of these conversations sitting on a server indefinitely, that is the risk you are accepting.

It is not a scam, it will not take your money and vanish, and the subscription cancels the normal way through the App Store, Google Play or your account settings depending on where you bought it.
Legitimate is not the same as good for you, and it is not the same as private. The Garante fine and the Mozilla assessment are both about a legitimate company handling data badly, which is a different failure from fraud. Treat those as a reason to be careful about what you type, not as a reason to assume the company is fake.
