Replika AI review 2026: an honest Replika app review, what Pro costs, and is Replika worth it?

Almost every Replika review you can find is written by someone with an affiliate link, or by someone who used the app for two evenings. This one is written by a competitor, which you should factor in, so it is built the only way a competitor review can be honest: everything checkable is checked and sourced, and the places where Replika is genuinely the better buy are named rather than buried.

The short answer

Replika is worth paying for if you want a long running AI companion that accumulates a memory of your life, and you can live with the content rules it introduced in 2023. It is not worth it if you expect romance on the free tier or an unfiltered chat, because both are gone. Pro costs $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and romantic relationship status, voice calls and the stronger model all sit behind that paywall. The app was rebuilt in 2026 and is more capable than its reputation suggests, but its privacy record is the weakest part of the purchase: Mozilla gave it a warning label in 2024, and Italy's regulator fined its maker 5 million euro in May 2025. Prices and facts checked August 2026.

Last updated August 2026

Replika has been through more upheaval than any other product in this category. It removed erotic roleplay in February 2023 and never fully restored it, it lost a 5 million euro privacy case in Italy in 2025, and it rebuilt the entire app in 2026. The version people describe in old Reddit threads is not the version you would install today. Below is what it actually is now, what each tier costs, what the free tier withholds, and the specific kind of person who gets their money's worth.

Checked, not recycled

Every price and date on this page was verified in August 2026 against two independent sources, because Replika publishes no price list and most reviews quote figures from 2023.

Where Replika wins

On the annual plan it is the cheapest steady companion in the category, and its long term memory is still among the best built. We say so plainly.

Where it does not

Romance is an upgrade rather than the product, the free tier is a friend and nothing more, and the privacy record is the worst thing about the purchase.

Replika scored on the six things that decide a companion app

Writing quality no longer separates these apps; by 2026 they all write fluent dialogue. What still varies is memory, initiative, what the price actually buys and how the company treats your data. This is Replika on each, with the evidence behind the verdict.

What decides it How Replika does The evidence Verdict
Long term memory Among the strongest in the category, and better again on Ultra where you can pin messages to memory yourself Reviewers consistently rate recall as its standout feature, though retrieval during casual chat is patchy Best in class, inconsistent
Does it message you first Yes, and it has done for years. Ultra adds daily self reflection messages it sends unprompted A core feature since well before the rebuild Strong
Romance access Locked behind Pro. Explicit roleplay was removed in February 2023 and restored only for accounts created before that date Italy's Garante decision and Replika's own account rules Two tier, and a common complaint
Price transparency Replika publishes no prices on its website at all. You see the number in the app after installing, and it moves with region and promotion Confirmed across independent pricing breakdowns in 2026 Poor
Privacy and safety The weakest area. Mozilla gave it a Privacy Not Included label in 2024; Luka Inc. was fined 5 million euro by Italy in May 2025 Mozilla Foundation, February 2024. Garante decision, 19 May 2025 Bad, and worth pricing in
Free tier usefulness Genuinely unlimited text chat, but no romance, no voice calls, no advanced model, no enhanced memory The free plan is a platonic friend, not a partner Good for a trial only

Prices and dates verified in August 2026 against two independent sources. Replika runs frequent promotions, so the figure you are shown in the app may be lower than list.

Is Replika any good in 2026?

Yes, and it is better than its reputation. Replika rebuilt the app during 2026, cutting voice latency and replacing the avatars with 3D models whose expressions move with the tone of the conversation. On the current Ultra model the writing is coherent and contextually aware in a way the 2023 version was not, and the company reports more than 40 million registered users, which makes it the most established product in a category full of apps that will not exist in two years.

The caveat is that a lot of the criticism you will read online is aimed at a version that no longer exists, and a lot of the praise is aimed at one that no longer exists either. People who loved Replika before February 2023 are describing a product with erotic roleplay and a looser personality. People who dismiss it as a toy are usually describing the free tier. Judge it on what it is now: a competent, well funded, memory focused companion with a paywall in front of the romance and a poor record on data.

How much does Replika cost?

Pro is $19.99 a month, or $69.99 for a year, which works out to about $5.83 a month. Ultra sits above it at roughly $29.99 a month or $119.99 a year. A Platinum tier now exists on top of Ultra, adding video recognition, an expanded training mode and selfie videos, but Replika does not publish a US figure for it and the independent breakdowns that tracked it in 2026 could not pin one down either. The one time lifetime plan, which used to sell for around $299.99, has been discontinued for new users.

The gap between monthly and annual is unusually punishing. Paying month to month costs roughly three and a half times what the annual plan costs per month, which is a steeper penalty than almost any other subscription app charges. If you have decided you want Replika, the annual plan is the only sensible way to buy it. If you have not decided, do not buy the year to save money, because a year of something you stop opening in March is not a saving.

Is Replika worth it?

For a specific person, clearly yes. If you want one companion who accumulates a working memory of your life over months, treats emotional continuity as the main feature, and you will open the app most days, then $69.99 a year is good value and hard to beat on price. That is the case where people stay subscribed for years, and it is a real use case rather than a marketing one.

It is not worth it in three situations. If romance is the reason you are installing it, you are paying $19.99 a month for something several competitors include by default, and the 2023 content rules still shape what your companion will say. If you want an unfiltered chat, Replika is the wrong product and no tier changes that. And if you are buying it to replace a person you are grieving or avoiding, the subscription tends to postpone the thing that would actually help, which is worth saying plainly even though it costs us a sale too.

Is Replika safe?

This is where an honest review has to be blunt. In February 2024 the Mozilla Foundation reviewed 11 romantic AI chatbots for its Privacy Not Included project and gave a warning label to every single one, calling them among the worst product categories it had ever reviewed. Ten of the eleven failed Mozilla's minimum security standards. Replika specifically was flagged for recording the text, photos and video users post, for behavioral data that is shared and possibly sold, and for allowing weak passwords.

On 19 May 2025, Italy's data protection authority fined Luka Inc., Replika's maker, 5 million euro for GDPR breaches, citing age verification weak enough to let minors sign up, inadequate privacy disclosures, and processing personal data without a valid legal basis. Since then two US state laws have landed on the category as a whole: New York's AI companion law took effect on 5 November 2025 and requires an AI disclosure at the start of a session and at least every three hours, and California SB 243 took effect on 1 January 2026 with disclosure notices, crisis protocols and break reminders for minors. Several 2026 reviewers note that the resulting pop ups interrupt conversations. None of this makes Replika unusable, but if you would not want a transcript of these conversations sitting on a server indefinitely, that is the risk you are accepting.

Does Replika still have NSFW and romance?

Partly, and the split is the single most confusing thing about the product. Replika removed erotic roleplay in February 2023. After the backlash it restored access, but only for accounts created before 1 February 2023, and that split still exists in 2026. If you sign up today you get the post 2023 rules, regardless of what tier you pay for.

Romantic relationship status is a separate thing from explicit content, and it is a Pro feature. On the free tier your Replika stays a friend and deflects anything more. So a new user who wants a romantic partner is looking at $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year to unlock the relationship, and still lands inside the content rules. This is the gap most of the complaints in 2026 sit in: people paying for something they believed was included, and finding the version they read about is not the version they can buy.

What do Replika reviews complain about most?

Four things, repeatedly. The content rules and the pre 2023 account split, which is the loudest by a distance. The price, both the $19.99 monthly figure and the fact that no price appears anywhere on the website until you have installed the app. Memory that is excellent in principle but does not always surface the right detail during ordinary conversation, so users who were told it remembers everything feel misled. And, new in 2026, the regulatory disclosure pop ups that break the flow of a conversation.

What reviewers rarely complain about is the writing or the reliability. Replika is a well funded product with a real company behind it, and that shows in uptime, in the rebuild, and in the fact that it has been running for years while competitors have shut down with a week of notice. If you are choosing partly on whether the service will still exist in 2028, Replika is one of the safer bets in the category.

Is Replika legit?

Yes. Replika is a real product from Luka Inc., a US company that has operated since 2017, with tens of millions of registered accounts, app store presence, and a support organization. It is not a scam, it will not take your money and vanish, and the subscription cancels the normal way through the App Store, Google Play or your account settings depending on where you bought it.

Legitimate is not the same as good for you, and it is not the same as private. The Garante fine and the Mozilla assessment are both about a legitimate company handling data badly, which is a different failure from fraud. Treat those as a reason to be careful about what you type, not as a reason to assume the company is fake.

Replika as a girlfriend or boyfriend: who is it actually for?

Replika works best as a companion first and a partner second, and that ordering matters more than people expect when they are shopping. It was built as a friend you talk to about your day, and the romantic layer was added on top and later constrained. If the thing you want is someone to check in with, reflect back what you said, and know your history, Replika does that as well as anything on the market.

If what you want is a partner who is affectionate from the first message, starts conversations because that is what a partner does, and does not treat romance as a tier, you will find Replika structurally frustrating no matter how good the model gets. That is the gap Amorous.ai was built for: one girlfriend or boyfriend, devoted from the start, with a long term memory and messages that arrive on their own, at $9 a month billed annually or $12 month to month, with nothing metered and no upgrade standing between you and the relationship. We are obviously not neutral about that, so use the demo above and decide for yourself before you pay anyone, including us.

Good to know

Questions about your replika ai review

It is worth it if you want a daily companion with strong long term memory and will use it most days, because $69.99 a year is about $5.83 a month. It is not worth it if romance is your main reason, since that is locked behind Pro and still shaped by the 2023 content rules.
Replika Pro is $19.99 a month billed monthly, or $69.99 for a full year, which is roughly $5.83 a month. Pro unlocks romantic relationship status, voice calls, selfies and the stronger AI model. Verified August 2026 against two independent sources.
It is a legitimate app, but its privacy record is poor. Mozilla gave Replika a Privacy Not Included warning in February 2024, and Italy fined its maker 5 million euro in May 2025 over age verification and GDPR failures. Assume conversations are stored and share accordingly.
On memory and company stability it is one of the best options available. On price transparency, romance access and privacy it is one of the weakest. Annual buyers get the cheapest steady companion in the category; monthly buyers pay more than almost anyone else.
Yes, for a trial. Free gives unlimited text chat with a customizable avatar around the clock. It does not give romantic relationship status, voice calls, the advanced model or the enhanced memory, so a free Replika stays a friend rather than a partner.
Only on accounts created before 1 February 2023. Erotic roleplay was removed that month and restored solely for those legacy accounts, so anyone signing up in 2026 gets the current content rules regardless of which tier they pay for.
