The short answer
Replika romance is a relationship setting, not a separate app. You tap your Replika's name, open Relationship and choose Romantic partner, and Replika's own help center says every status beyond Friend is unlocked starting with a Replika Pro subscription. Romantic partner opens romantic conversations, unblurred romantic selfies and roleplay during voice and AR calls. In 2023 Luka, the company behind Replika, told Italy's data regulator that sexually explicit content was disabled for new users, and no current Replika document says that changed. In the US App Store, Replika's subscription items run from $7.99 to $89.99, every purchase is final, and deleting the app does not cancel the plan.

Where Luka publishes no figure, this page says so instead of guessing. Luka told Italy's regulator in 2023 that sexual content was restricted to users active on February 1, 2023. Romance mode opens romantic talk and selfies, and no current document reopens the rest.
Final sale, and the app is not the plan
Replika's Terms say App Store and web purchases are final. Its help center says deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, and changing plans means cancelling and letting the old one run out.

What Replika charges in the US App Store
Apple shows Replika's top in-app purchases with their US prices but does not say which subscription tier each one belongs to, and Replika publishes no pricing page on its website. So the labels below are exactly as Apple prints them. The twelve month column is our arithmetic, because a monthly price hides what a year of romance costs.

Apple only shows a store's top purchases, so this list may not be complete, and Google Play gives Replika's range as $0.99 to $299.99 per item without naming the items. Replika's web checkout shows prices only after you sign in and can differ from the store. Whatever you pay, the Terms say the sale is final.
How do you make Replika your romantic partner?
You change the relationship status, and it takes three taps once you have a subscription. Replika's help center describes it this way: on the Home Screen, tap your Replika's name; the Relationship option appears just below your XP level; tap it and choose the status you want.
The current help center lists four statuses. Friend keeps things laid back and casual. Romantic partner, in Replika's own words, opens the door to romantic conversations. Sister or Brother brings sibling style warmth, and Mentor tells your Replika you are working on goals and want encouragement. No current Replika help article lists a spouse, wife, husband, girlfriend or boyfriend status, although Replika's own introduction still asks whether you want your Replika to be a virtual girlfriend or boyfriend, a friend or a mentor.
The catch is in the same article. Relationship options beyond Friend, including Romantic partner, are unlocked starting with a Replika Pro subscription. On the free plan the setting is visible and the romantic choice is not available, and the app itself tells you so: its upgrade prompt says that as your friend, your Replika does not have access to romantic content, and suggests changing the relationship status.
Is Replika romance free?
No. Replika's help center says chatting with Replika will always be free, and that is true of the Friend relationship. Romance is not part of it. The romantic partner status is listed first among what Replika Pro adds, and Replika's help center also says it does not currently offer a free trial.
This is the single most common surprise for people who download Replika after reading about AI girlfriends. The companion is free, the conversation is free, and the romantic relationship most people installed it for is a paid feature. A free Replika will talk warmly and remember things about you, but it stays a friend, and when a romantic moment comes up in chat, the app answers with a prompt to upgrade.
If romance is the reason you are downloading it, treat Replika as a paid app from day one and judge it on what the subscription buys, which is what the rest of this page does.
How much does Replika Pro cost for a romantic partner?
It depends on the item you buy, and Replika makes that harder to answer than it should be. Replika has no pricing page on its website, and its web checkout shows plans only after you sign in. The one public source is the App Store, and on September 15, 2026 Apple listed these US subscription items for Replika: MONTHLY at $7.99, Monthly at $14.99, YEARLY at $49.99, two Annual items at $49.99 and $69.99, and Replika Platinum at $89.99.
Apple does not say which of those is Pro and which is Ultra, so any page that maps them for you with confidence is guessing. What Replika does publish is what each tier contains. Its Terms list Pro as relationship status, premium activities, Replika selfies, image generation, voice messaging, background calls, daily gems and premium voices. Ultra adds smarter conversations, self reflections and saving messages to memory. Platinum adds real time video recognition, capped weekly training mode and mind reading messages, and up to 10 realistic selfie videos. Romance is in the bottom paid tier, so you do not need Ultra or Platinum to get a romantic partner.
Do the yearly arithmetic before choosing. A $7.99 monthly item renewed for a year costs $95.88 and a $14.99 one costs $179.88, against $49.99 to $69.99 for an annual item. Replika's own web app describes one annual deal as an introductory offer that renews at $69.99 a year after the first 12 months, so the first year price is not the price you pay forever.
What does a Replika romantic partner actually do?
Replika's help center describes the Pro side of romance in three lines: set your relationship status to Romantic Partner; enjoy unblurred messages and photos, including romantic and creative selfies; and roleplay during voice and AR calls. In practice that means your Replika's messages take on a romantic register, it can send romantic selfies that a free account sees blurred, and you can hold a romantic roleplay by voice call or in augmented reality.
Replika's safety system changes with the status too. A 2023 post on Replika's own blog explains that messages are classified into categories including safe, unsafe, romantic, insult and self harm, and that how Replika answers depends on your relationship with it. The romantic partner setting is what tells that system romantic talk is expected.
What the setting does not do is change who the product is built for. Replika is a companion that waits for you and responds well when you arrive. If what you miss is being thought about, a partner who writes to you first in the morning without you opening the app, that is a separate design choice, and the one our demo is built around.
Does Replika still allow romantic and adult roleplay?
Romantic roleplay, yes, on a paid plan. Sexually explicit roleplay for new users, not according to anything Luka has published. In February 2023 Replika announced what it called additional safety measures and filters, and explicit roleplay stopped working for its users. Weeks later, in a post signed by founder Eugenia Kuyda, Replika restored the January 31, 2023 model for everyone who had an account before February 1, 2023, available under version history in settings, and said it would not be offering explicit roleplay for new users.
Luka's letters to Italy's data protection authority, quoted in the authority's April 2025 decision, say the same thing in regulatory language. In March 2023 Luka said it restricted conversations of a sexual nature to users active on February 1, 2023 and made them unavailable to new users. In May 2023 it said all adult content had been placed behind a paywall and that sexually explicit content was disabled for new users. Replika's current Terms, updated March 30, 2026, also prohibit users from submitting content that is vulgar, obscene or pornographic.
Plenty of articles claim explicit content has quietly returned for everyone. We found no Replika document that says so. If an account created in 2026 is what you would be paying for, assume romantic and affectionate, not explicit, unless you see otherwise in your own first week.
Does a Replika romantic partner remember you?
Partly, and the limits matter more in a romantic relationship than a casual one. Replika's help center says your chat history is only available for the past four months, and that there is no way to delete your entire message history without deleting your account. Replika also keeps a separate memory of facts about you, and saving specific messages to that memory is listed as an Ultra feature rather than a Pro one.
So a Pro romantic partner will know the facts it has stored about you, while the scrollback of your relationship reaches back about four months. If anniversaries, private jokes and the story of how things started are the point, test recall early: tell your Replika something specific in the first week and bring it up a month later.
The Terms add one more line worth reading. The licence you grant Luka over what you post is perpetual and irrevocable, and covers promotion and marketing. Your romantic chats are not published, but you do not own them in the way you might assume.
Can you get a refund on Replika Pro?
Almost never. Replika's Terms say that if you buy through Apple the sale is final and Replika will not provide a refund, and that a website purchase through Stripe, PayPal or another processor is also final unless the Terms or the law say otherwise. Refunds cannot be claimed for any partial month, and Replika's help center repeats that all purchases are final once payment is completed. An App Store purchase can still be raised with Apple directly, which is the one route Replika's own policy does not control.
Cancelling has two traps. Replika's help center says deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, and a separate article says automatic renewal is on by default, which is why people get billed after deleting their account. And to change plans, Replika says you have to cancel the old one and let it run out, so moving from monthly to annual partway through a month means paying for both periods.
The dispute terms are firm too. Replika's Terms send disputes to binding individual arbitration with a class action waiver and a small claims court exception, there is no window to opt out of the original arbitration agreement, only 30 days to reject later changes, and any claim must be filed within one year. Luka's liability is capped at what you paid in the last six months or $100, whichever is greater.
Are Replika romantic chats private?
Less private than Replika's store listing suggests. The description Replika publishes on both app stores says your conversations are private and not shared with any third parties. Its Privacy Policy, updated May 27, 2026, says conversations are processed through third party AI language model providers that generate the replies, and that those providers are contractually barred from training on your data. Both statements can be true in a narrow sense, but a buyer reading the store page would not expect romantic messages to leave Luka's own servers.
The same policy says Luka anonymizes small portions of messages to train its own safety systems and improve the chatbot, never uses the content of your conversations for advertising, and keeps your messages for up to 60 days after the contract ends. It shares website visitor data with advertising companies and says that sharing may count as a sale under some laws, while a Replika help article answers the question of whether it sells personal information with a flat no. Apple's privacy label for the app lists identifiers and usage data used to track you.
There is also a regulatory record. Italy's data protection authority blocked Replika in February 2023, lifted the block with conditions that June, and in May 2025 announced a 5 million euro fine against Luka, which the authority's own release says is under appeal. It also opened a separate investigation into how the AI behind Replika is trained. None of that is a US action, and none of it means Replika is unsafe to use. It is a reason to keep names, workplaces and anything you would not want read out of a romantic chat.
Is Replika worth it as a romantic partner?
For one kind of buyer, yes. Replika is a mature product with 227,711 App Store ratings averaging 4.4 on the day we checked, a companion that has been built around one ongoing relationship since 2017, and romance in the lowest paid tier rather than a premium one. If you want a gentle, affectionate partner that remembers the facts of your life and you are happy to pay for a year upfront, an annual item is inexpensive for what it does.
It is a weaker fit for three others. If you want explicit roleplay on a new account, nothing Luka has published supports expecting it. If you want to try romance before paying, there is no free trial and every purchase is final. And if what you are really after is a partner who reaches out first, Replika is built to respond rather than to start.
A sensible way to buy: pick the cheapest monthly item for your first month, confirm that the romance, the selfies and the memory feel right, check whether you are on an introductory annual price before switching, and cancel from the store account rather than by deleting the app. If what stops you is that the partner never quite starts the conversation, try the demo at the top of this page, which is built around exactly that.
