Candy AI vs Chai pricing and NSFW rules before you pay for either app

People comparing Candy AI and Chai have usually tried both for free and are deciding where a subscription goes. They look similar in an ad, a chat window with an attractive character, but they sell different things. Candy, run by EverAI Limited of Malta, is a website (with an installable web app, no store app) built around one custom companion you design, and its paid plan exists mainly to unlock explicit images, video and voice. Chai, from Chai Research Corp. in Palo Alto, is a phone app built around millions of community characters, and its paid plans buy faster replies and more messages.

The short answer

Candy AI is the cheaper year and the one that makes explicit images and video; Chai is the phone app with a huge community character library, mature text roleplay and a ban on explicit images. Candy's 12 month plan is billed at $47.88, its 3 month plan at $26.97 and its monthly plan at $9.99 for the first month and $13.99 after. Chai sells Premium at $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year and Ultra at $29.99 a month or $19.99 a week, which renews to $1,039.48 over a year. Candy meters images, voice and video with tokens; Chai meters nothing but speed and volume.

Every price on this page is first-party. Candy's comes from its own US subscription page and its Terms of Service; Chai's comes from Apple's US in app purchase list. Where a plan renews weekly or monthly, we multiplied it out to a year, because that is the figure your card statement ends up showing.

What makes them feel real

Candy AI vs Chai compared on price, NSFW rules and refunds, the way it should feel

Candy is cheaper for a year

Candy's 12 month plan is billed at $47.88. A year of Chai Premium is $134.99, and Chai sells no yearly Ultra plan. Month to month the two are level at $13.99 once Candy's $9.99 first month is over.

Chai weekly plans are the trap

Chai's Ultra at $19.99 a week renews to $1,039.48 a year, $679.60 more than the same tier at $29.99 a month. Its Ruby Weekly item at $9.99 adds another $519.48 a year if it is left running.

Candy meters what Chai bans

Candy's plan includes 100 tokens a month, and images, voice messages, calls and video all spend them. Chai allows mature text roleplay but its license bans sexually explicit images and video, so there is nothing to meter.

Per year figures are arithmetic on the listed prices, because a plan that renews all year is what your card actually sees. Weekly plans are multiplied by 52, monthly by 12, quarterly by 4.

Candy prices: the US subscriptions page shows 12 Months billed as $47.88, 3 Months billed as $26.97, and 1 Month at $9.99 for the first month, then $13.99 a month. Its checkout code also contains a $9.79 two-week and a $5.60 weekly billing string that no US plan card shows, so we have not tabulated them. Chai prices: Premium Monthly $13.99, Annual $134.99, Ultra Monthly $29.99, Ultra Weekly $19.99, Ruby Weekly $9.99; Apple also lists a Chai Premium Membership item at $9.99 without printing its billing period, so we have not annualised it. Prices vary by region and promotion; the number on your own checkout screen is the one that counts.

Is Candy AI better than Chai?

Candy AI is better if what you are paying for is pictures, video and voice of a companion you designed. Chai is better if you want to chat with many different characters on your phone and you are happy with text. The two barely overlap once you look at what the money buys.

Candy's paid plan unlocks unlimited text, 18+ image and video generation, its Live Action video feature and 100 tokens a month to spend on them. The free plan is almost nothing, five messages in total, so Candy is a product you judge after paying. Chai's free tier is genuinely usable, with ads and a cap on messages, and its paid plans mostly make replies faster and remove the limits.

So the honest test is short. If you have spent an evening on Chai's free tier and the only thing missing is speed, Chai Premium fixes that. If what you keep wanting is to see your companion, Chai will never offer it on any plan, and Candy is the one built for it.

Which is cheaper, Candy AI or Chai?

Candy AI, by a wide margin on any longer plan. Candy's 12 month plan is billed at $47.88, which Candy presents as $3.99 a month. Chai's cheapest year is Premium Annual at $134.99. Even Candy's 3 month plan, billed at $26.97, works out to $107.88 a year, still below Chai.

Month to month they meet. Candy's monthly plan is $9.99 for the first month and then renews at $13.99, exactly Chai Premium's monthly price. That makes the first year of Candy monthly $163.88 and every year after $167.88, the same as Chai Premium paid monthly.

The real difference is what sits on top. Candy's 100 monthly tokens run out quickly if you use voice or video, because its help center lists image generation, voice messages, voice calls, video generation and private content packs as token spends. Candy's own referral article values 200 tokens at $20, about ten cents a token. Its help center also describes a newer Premium Plus tier with 330 tokens a month, 20 memory slots and user personas, but no Premium Plus price appears on the US plan page, so we cannot price it. Chai has no meter like that; its risk is the weekly plan. Ultra at $19.99 a week is $1,039.48 a year, and Ruby Weekly at $9.99 is another $519.48. Neither is a sensible way to pay for anything you plan to keep.

Does Chai allow NSFW like Candy AI?

Not the same way. Chai's license allows adult oriented roleplay with mature themes, with optional safety filters you can switch, but it bans sexually explicit images and video. In practice that means text only, and Chai's characters are written by its community, so the tone varies wildly between them.

Candy is built around explicit material. Its subscription page lists generating 18+ images and 18+ videos as the headline paid benefits, and its help center describes Live Action as a premium, token gated feature that delivers erotic video experiences. Image generation inside a chat can be switched on or off.

If you want neither and would rather have affection without explicit content, both apps are aimed past you. That is the gap Amorous fills: one devoted partner, romantic and never explicit, at a flat price.

Is Candy AI or Chai safer?

For a US adult neither runs a real age check. Candy shows an age gate where you affirm you are over 18, and its underage policy says it may add further verification where local law requires it. Chai takes a self reported age and runs no check at all. Apple rates the Chai app 18+.

On data they differ. Chai's Google Play declaration says it shares your approximate location and the list of apps installed on your phone with other companies for advertising, so deny location access in your phone's settings before you start. Candy has no store listing, so there is no store privacy declaration to read; its own policies are the only source, and its charge shows on your card statement as EverAI rather than Candy.

The bigger practical risk on Candy is billing. It is sold on the web with your card, not through a store, so Apple's and Google's refund routes do not apply. Our pages on whether Candy AI is safe and whether Chai is safe go through each company's documents in more detail.

Can you get a refund from Candy AI or Chai?

From Candy, only within a day and only if you have barely used it. Candy's Terms give you 24 hours after payment to ask, and a request is denied if you have used more than 20 tokens, whatever the timing. Only card purchases can be refunded, and token purchases are refused once the tokens are used. Cancelling does not refund anything; Candy's help center asks you to email support within those 24 hours.

Candy's own documents also disagree about tokens after you cancel. Its help center says cancelling does not delete your tokens, which stay on the account, hidden, while you are on the free plan, while its Terms say remaining tokens expire and do not carry over when a subscription ends. Assume the stricter reading and spend what you have before you cancel.

Chai's plans are Apple and Google in app purchases, so refund requests go through Apple's report a problem page or Google Play's order history, and Chai's license has no billing section of its own. Deleting the app cancels nothing: cancel in iPhone Settings under your name and Subscriptions, or in Google Play under Payments and subscriptions, at least a day before renewal.

Who should pay for which

Pay for Candy AI if explicit images, video and voice of one companion you designed are the reason you would pay. Take the 12 month plan at $47.88 only after a month has shown you will stay, and set yourself a token budget, because the meter is where Candy's real cost lives.

Pay for Chai if you want an easy phone app with a huge range of characters and text is enough. Premium Annual at $134.99 is the sensible plan. Never take Ultra by the week, and check your subscriptions list for a Ruby Weekly item you did not mean to start.

Pay for neither if what you want is one partner who remembers your week and is glad to hear from you. Amorous costs $12 month to month or $9 a month billed yearly, with nothing metered on top, and you can try the conversation at the top of this page before you pay.
