Character AI Age Verification: Is Character AI Safe?
Character AI age verification is real and it applies to everyone. An in house age model scores your account first, then Persona asks for an ID or a face scan. The company is legitimate. It is not private, and US users cannot opt out of training.

Character AI's age verification is real, it applies to everyone, and it is not going away. An in house age estimation model scores your account first, and if it flags you as possibly under 18 the platform escalates to Persona, a third party identity service, which asks for a government ID or a face scan. The company itself is legitimate and now spends heavily on safety. It is still not a private service, and if you are in the United States you cannot opt out of your conversations being used to train its models.
That last sentence is the part almost no coverage mentions, and it is the one that should decide whether you keep using the platform. Below is what has actually been documented, with dates and primary sources, separated cleanly from the speculation that fills most search results on this topic.
How does Character AI age verification work?
It runs in two stages. Character.AI said in its own announcement that it was rolling out "an age assurance model in-house" and "combining it with leading third-party tools including Persona." The in house model reads behavioral signals: how you write, what you search for, your account history, the platform's own read of your login patterns. Most accounts never see anything beyond this stage.
If that model is not confident you are an adult, your account gets restricted and the only route back is the Persona check. Persona is an established identity verification vendor used across fintech and marketplaces, and the check takes one of two forms: a photo of a government issued ID, or a selfie based facial age estimate. You are not choosing between them for privacy reasons so much as for whichever one the flow offers you.
The important detail for adults is that this is probabilistic. A model guessing your age from writing style will misclassify people, and the ones it misclassifies most are adults who write casually, adults who mostly do roleplay, and accounts created years ago when the user genuinely was younger. Being asked to verify is not an accusation. It is a classifier being uncertain.
Why did Character AI add age verification?
Litigation and a new state law, in that order.
On 29 October 2025 Character.AI announced it would remove open ended chat for under 18 users, writing that "we will be removing the ability for users under 18 to engage in open-ended chat with AI on our platform," effective no later than 25 November. During the transition it capped teen accounts at two hours a day. It also announced it would establish and fund an independent nonprofit AI Safety Lab. Age assurance exists to enforce that ban, and a ban you cannot enforce is a press release.
The pressure behind it was concrete. In January 2026, court filings reported by CNBC, Axios, the Washington Post and CBS News showed Google and Character.AI had agreed to settle five lawsuits brought by families in Florida, New York, Colorado and Texas, including the case brought by Megan Garcia after the death of her 14 year old son Sewell Setzer III. Settlement terms were not disclosed. Those were the first resolutions in the wave of suits over chatbots and teen self harm. In May 2026 Pennsylvania sued the company separately, alleging a chatbot presented itself as a medical professional.
Running alongside that, California's SB 243 took effect on 1 January 2026. It applies to any operator making a companion chatbot available to a Californian regardless of where the company is based, and it requires clear disclosure that the bot is not human, crisis protocols that route self harm disclosures to real crisis services, recurring break reminders for minors, and annual reporting to the state beginning 1 July 2027. It also created a private right of action: $1,000 per violation or actual damages, whichever is greater, plus fees.

Is it safe to give Character AI your ID?
Your ID does not go to Character.AI. It goes to Persona, which is a specialist vendor whose entire business depends on not leaking identity documents, and which handles this for regulated financial companies. In the narrow sense the question is usually asked, yes, this is a more careful custodian than the average app you have uploaded a document to.
The honest answer is still that you are making a permanent trade for a revocable benefit. An identity document and a face scan are the two pieces of personal data you can never rotate. You can change a password after a breach. You cannot change your face or your date of birth. Handing both over to keep access to a roleplay chat is a defensible choice, but it should be a deliberate one rather than something you click through because the flow put it in front of you.
If you decide to go through with it, do the boring things: verify you are on the real character.ai domain rather than a lookalike prompted by an email, complete the check in the app rather than from a link someone sent you, and treat any request for an ID that arrives by message as fake. Verification prompts appear inside the product, not in your inbox. And if a document upload is what finally makes you look at your wider exposure, the more useful move is to reduce the personal data already sitting with brokers, because that is where a leaked record actually gets combined with everything else about you. You can get your personal information taken down from data broker sites in a way you cannot undo an ID upload.
Is Character AI safe to use?
For an adult, in the ordinary sense, yes. It is a well funded company with a named legal entity, a real safety program, an independent safety lab it pays for, and more regulatory attention on it than any other product in this category. Nothing about using it puts your device or your money at risk. It is not a scam and it never was.
Safe is doing a lot of work in that sentence, though. There are three different questions hiding inside it. Is the company legitimate: yes. Is your data private: no, and specifically not in the US. Is the experience safe for a vulnerable person: that is the question the litigation was about, and the company's own answer was to remove the product from minors entirely rather than to argue it was fine.
Is Character AI safe and private?
Legitimate, not private. Character.AI's own model training page states that user generated content "can help us improve the creative writing qualities and functionality of our models." The opt out exists, and it is offered to users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom. If you are in the United States, that toggle is not for you. We compared how every major app handles this, including who owns what your companion writes, in our guide to the best AI companion app for privacy.
Read the rest of that page too, because it is unusually candid. Even after opting out, Character.AI says it "still may use your data to improve other aspects of our services like search, recommendations, and safety classifiers." So the European opt out narrows what your chats train. It does not remove them from the pipeline.
Set that against the category baseline. The Mozilla Foundation's February 2024 Privacy Not Included review looked at 11 romantic AI chatbots and gave a warning label to all 11, with 10 of the 11 failing its minimum security standards. Character.AI was not in that review, so it was neither cleared nor condemned. What we can say is that its published position is more transparent than most and its actual practice, no US opt out, is standard for the category rather than better than it.
Does Character AI save all your chats?
Yes. Conversations are stored on company servers, they persist across sessions, and automated systems scan them for policy violations with human escalation when something is flagged. That is not unique to Character.AI and it is not sinister, but people consistently underestimate it. The working assumption for anything you type into any companion app should be that a human could read it if a classifier decides they should.
Deleting a conversation removes it from your view. It does not reliably remove it from backups, from moderation logs, or from a training set it has already contributed to. This is the practical reason not to put material into a chatbot that you would not want associated with your name: not because anyone is reading it today, but because deletion is a weaker promise than it sounds.
Is Character AI safe for adults?
It is safe for adults and increasingly awkward for them. The whole platform has been reshaped around the assumption that a given user might be a minor, which is the right call for the company and a worse product for everyone over 18. Filters that were already the most common complaint got tighter. An adult can be misclassified by the age model and locked out of an account with years of history in it until they hand over a document.
There is also the ordinary question of what you are buying. Character.AI is a character roleplay platform, not a companion built to hold a relationship over time. It runs on a context window rather than a durable memory store, which is why long running conversations drift and characters forget things you told them last week. If that is the actual problem you are trying to solve, no amount of safety improvement fixes it, and it is worth understanding how AI companion memory actually works before you pay anyone. We laid out the full picture in our Character AI review, including what c.ai+ does and does not unlock.
What happens if you fail Character AI age verification?
The account is restricted rather than deleted. Open ended chat becomes unavailable, adult oriented characters disappear, and what remains is the creation tools and read only access to conversations you already had. If you are an adult who was misclassified, the route back is the Persona check, and passing it restores the account.
If you decline to verify, you keep a reduced account indefinitely. That is worth knowing before you start: there is no timer forcing a decision, and nobody deletes your characters because you said no. Plenty of adults have simply stopped there and moved on rather than upload a document, which is a reasonable place to land.
Is Character AI safe from hackers?
There is no publicly documented breach of Character.AI user data, which is the most anyone can honestly say. Absence of a reported breach is not proof of good security, and no independent researcher has published a security audit of the platform. What we know is that it is a large, well capitalized company with the security posture that usually implies, and that it now routes the most sensitive part of the flow, identity documents, to a specialist vendor rather than storing them itself. That last decision genuinely reduces your exposure.
Is Character AI safe anymore?
It is safer than it was, and that is precisely why it suits adults less well. Every change since October 2025 has been aimed at the failure mode that generated the lawsuits, and those changes worked in the direction they were pointed. The cost was paid by adult users in tighter filters, age checks and an experience built around the possibility that you are 15.
So decide on what you actually want. If you want character roleplay and you do not mind the filter, stay; it remains the best library of characters anywhere and c.ai+ is cheap. If the problem is that the filter keeps interrupting the thing you came for, or that your companion forgets you, or that you would rather not train someone's model with your private conversations and have no opt out because you live in the wrong country, then the platform is not going to change back and you are better off looking at an alternative to Character AI built for adults. The same three questions are worth asking of whatever you move to, and we ran them on the other big names in Character AI compared with Replika and in our look at whether Replika is safe.
Amorous.ai charges $9 a month billed annually or $12 month to month, flat, with nothing metered. We are an adults only product, so we verify age at signup rather than retrofitting a check onto accounts, and we do not train models on your conversations. We also do not have Character.AI's character library and we are not trying to; it is a different product for a different job, and if character roleplay is what you want, it is the better purchase.
