Best AI Companion App Without ID Verification in 2026

Most AI companion apps will never ask you for a government ID. Kindroid treats a paid subscription as your age check and never asks a subscriber for a document. Nomi.ai and Replika are 18+ in their terms but run no document check today. Character.AI is the outlier: its system can escalate an adult account to a selfie and then to a government ID, and paying does not exempt you.

That difference caught a lot of people by surprise in April 2026, when Character.AI began pushing existing accounts through age assurance and locking chats to read only until the check was done. Below is what each platform actually does, taken from the platforms' own help pages and terms rather than from roundups, with the source for every row.

Which AI companion apps require ID verification?

Only one of the major platforms currently puts adults in front of a camera, and that is Character.AI. Kindroid can ask a free user for a check but gives them a way out that is not a document. Nomi.ai and Replika publish no document requirement at all. Amorous.ai asks nothing beyond confirming you are an adult when you create the account.

Janitor AI is the one entry where the answer depends entirely on where you are sitting. It began verifying age on 24 April 2026 in Australia and Brazil and on 15 June 2026 in the UK, detected purely by IP address, and its help center states that users in every other country are completely unaffected. For a US reader that means no check at all, today. It is worth reading as a geographic exemption rather than a company policy, because it was created by three national laws rather than chosen, and the exemption lasts exactly as long as US law leaves it alone. Janitor's flow is also the most privacy conscious in this table when it does fire: k-ID returns only a yes or no on whether you are over 18, facial estimation runs on your device with nothing uploaded, and an ID scan is deleted as soon as your age is confirmed. The reason the answers differ so much is that the law does not yet force a single approach. A dozen states enacted companion chatbot rules in the first half of 2026, and California's SB 243 took effect on 1 January 2026, but those laws mostly turn on whether an operator has actual knowledge that a user is a minor. They require disclosure that the bot is not human and crisis protocols that route self harm disclosures to real services. None of them mandates that every adult upload a driver's license. Where a platform goes further than the law, that is a policy choice it made, and it is fair to weigh it like any other product decision.

Does Kindroid require age verification?

Not for paying users. Kindroid's own help center, updated 3 April 2026, states that if you have an active subscription through the App Store, Google Play or web billing, "your payment on file serves as your age verification" and no further checks apply. It also says that once an account becomes paid it stays verified even if the subscription later lapses.

Free accounts sit under a behavioral estimation system that runs quietly in the background on the same infrastructure Kindroid uses for content moderation. If it flags you, you get two routes: subscribe, or verify through Yoti with either a selfie based age estimate or a government ID. Kindroid says Yoti processes this independently, deletes the images and biometric data afterward, and that Kindroid itself never receives or stores identity documents.

What makes this page unusually useful is that Kindroid published the numbers, which almost nobody in this category does. Fewer than 2% of new free accounts have triggered the behavioral system. Of those flagged, roughly 55% never completed verification, which the company reads as those accounts belonging to people who could not confirm they were 18. Among flagged users who did verify as adults, 80% chose the Yoti route and 20% simply subscribed. If you are a free Kindroid user, the realistic odds of ever seeing a prompt are small. One practical note if you take the subscribe route purely to skip a face scan: you have just started a recurring charge whose whole purpose was a one time problem. Kindroid bills monthly, the add ons bill monthly only, and cancelling the base plan does not stop the add ons. It is worth having something that flags recurring charges you stopped getting value from rather than discovering it eleven months later on a statement.

Does Character AI require ID verification?

It can, and this is the platform that pushed most people to start asking the question. Character.AI runs an in house age assurance model that reads behavioral signals first: how you write, your account history, your login patterns. Most accounts never see anything more. If the model is not confident you are an adult, it escalates to Persona, a third party identity vendor, which asks for a selfie based age estimate and falls back to a government ID when the selfie is inconclusive.

The part that stings is that this reached accounts with years of history in them. Through April 2026 the checks rolled out in waves to existing users, who found their conversations locked to read only until they verified. Adults well past 18 got caught by it, because a classifier guessing age from writing style will misclassify people, and it misclassifies casual writers and long dormant accounts most.

That has since been narrowed. As of a Reading Mode help page update on 14 July 2026, read only status applies to accounts verified as under 18, so adults who clear the check keep full access. Worth knowing: on Character.AI, paying does not buy you out of the check the way it does on Kindroid. c.ai+ is a content and convenience subscription, not an identity signal. Our Character AI review goes through what the paid tier does and does not unlock.

One correction to how this usually gets reported, because it matters if Character.AI is otherwise the app you want. The check is not applied to everybody. Character.AI's own FAQ says: "We'll run our age assurance technology on all accounts. But as we said above, you won't be asked to verify your age, i.e. you won't be asked for a selfie, unless we believe you're under 18 and you want to prove that you're actually 18+." If the behavioral model reads you as an adult, no selfie prompt ever appears. The risk is being misclassified, not a universal document demand.

If you are prompted, though, there is no negotiating it. The help center states plainly that "there is no alternative to submitting a selfie or government ID if you are prompted to do so. These are the only accepted methods for completing age verification." No support override, no appeal by email. And the selfie is fussier than people expect: filters, makeup effects or drawn-on features can get it declined, more than one face in the frame can fail it, and a document photo has to be "of a physical ID, not a digital or electronic copy," so a mobile driver's license screenshot will not clear.

How well that process is going is measurable, because Character.AI's help center publishes whether readers found each article helpful. Checked on 16 September 2026, 10,708 of 14,284 votes across its eight age assurance articles marked the page unhelpful, and the two worst rated are the pages people reach after something has already failed. Do Nomi and Replika require age verification?

Neither runs a documented document check. Nomi.ai's terms of service state plainly that anyone under 18 cannot use the platform under any circumstances, and the company reserves the right to add age verification procedures at any time, which is a sentence worth remembering rather than dismissing. Today, though, signing up does not involve Persona, Yoti or an upload.

Replika is 18+ in its terms as well. Its history here is the relevant fact: Italy's data protection authority fined Luka Inc. 5,000,000 euro on 19 May 2025, with weak age gating among the findings. A fine for not checking ages is not the same as a promise never to check them, so treat Replika's current lack of a check as a snapshot rather than a policy commitment.

PolyBuzz is the second app in this table that verifies by geography rather than by policy, and the pair of them make the pattern hard to miss. Its Terms of Use carry a section headed "Mandatory Age Verification in United Kingdom (UK)" requiring verification through Ondato or Yoti before access, and nothing equivalent for anywhere else. A US adult enters a birthdate and is through. That is notable because PolyBuzz declares heavier adult content to Apple than any other large app here, so the app with the most permissive content sits behind one of the weakest gates, and we go through its full disclosure record in our look at whether PolyBuzz is safe.

Two geo gated apps out of seven is enough to state the rule plainly: in this category an age check is almost never a product decision, it is a jurisdiction. If you are in the US, the practical question is not which app verifies but which app would verify if Congress moved, and the answer is that the ones already built for it will do it fastest.

What is Yoti age verification, and what is Persona?

They are the two identity vendors behind almost every age check you will hit in this category. Yoti is a UK company offering facial age estimation from a selfie plus document verification; Kindroid uses it. Persona is a US identity verification platform used widely across fintech and marketplaces; Character.AI uses it. In both cases the platform receives a pass or fail result rather than your document.

That structure genuinely reduces your exposure compared to a companion app storing IDs itself. What it does not do is make the trade reversible. Retention claims also vary and are worth reading carefully: Character.AI's help center says submissions made during age assurance are deleted within seven days, while independent write ups cite Persona's own thirty day biometric deletion window. Neither figure has been independently audited, and we are not going to pick one and present it as settled.

Which apps check your age inside the United States?

Until recently the answer was almost none, and that shaped this whole page. Janitor AI gates Australia, Brazil and the UK. PolyBuzz gates the UK alone. In every one of those cases an American adult was explicitly unaffected, which is why the practical advice for a US reader used to be that the geography question did not apply to them.

SpicyChat broke that pattern, and it is the row in the table above worth rereading. It enforces age verification in 26 US states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming, with West Virginia added in June 2026. Alongside those sit the UK, France, Italy and Australia. The check is applied by IP address, so it follows where you are rather than where you signed up, and the default method is a video selfie with a government ID as the fallback.

Refusing is less punishing than it sounds. Read the trend rather than the snapshot. More than a dozen further states have age verification bills in committee or awaiting signature, and the platforms most exposed are the ones selling explicit content to Americans through a US corporate entity. If you are choosing an app partly to avoid a face scan, choose one whose answer is structural rather than temporary: a platform that verifies nowhere because no law reaches it yet may be asking for a selfie the month your state's bill takes effect.

Is it safe to upload your ID to an AI companion app?

In the narrow sense, usually yes. Yoti and Persona are specialist vendors whose entire business depends on not leaking identity documents, and they are more careful custodians than the average app you have already handed a photo to. There is no publicly documented breach at either.

The wider answer is that you are making a permanent trade for a revocable benefit. A face and a date of birth are the two pieces of personal data you cannot rotate after a breach. You can change a password. You cannot change your face. Handing both over to keep access to a chat product is a defensible decision, but it should be a decision rather than something you click through because the flow put it in front of you at 11pm.

If you do go ahead, do the boring things. Check you are on the real domain and not a lookalike from an email, complete the check inside the app rather than from a link someone sent you, and treat any ID request arriving by message as fake. Real verification prompts appear in the product, never in your inbox.

One more case is worth adding, because it breaks the assumption underneath this whole comparison. Sesame asks a US adult for nothing at all: no ID, no face scan, no age estimation, and its app is free on the App Store. By the logic of every other row here that should make it the permissive option. It is the opposite. Sesame's Acceptable Use Policy, updated July 2026, prohibits generating sexually explicit content and engaging in erotic or pornographic chats outright, and the company reserves the right to run detection and monitoring to enforce it.

So no age gate does not mean no limits, and an age gate does not mean the content behind it is adult. The two questions are genuinely independent, and picking an app on the verification flow alone will land some people somewhere much stricter than they expected. Which AI companion app is best if you do not want a face scan?

If you want a free option and are willing to risk a small chance of a prompt, Kindroid's free plan is the strongest choice, and its published numbers suggest fewer than one in fifty free accounts ever gets flagged. One last thing that matters more than the age check and gets almost no coverage. Character.AI's model training opt out is offered to users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom only. If you are in the United States, there is no toggle. You can pass every verification step and still have no way to keep your conversations out of the training pipeline, which for a lot of people is the more consequential trade of the two.
