Is Janitor AI Safe? Data, Age Checks and Paid Plans Reviewed

Janitor AI is reasonably safe for a US adult in the narrow sense that matters most: as of August 2026 it does not ask American users for an ID or a face scan, it does not sell personal data, and your chats are private unless you publish them yourself. The real risks sit somewhere else. They are in the model you connect it to, in a memory system that lost data on roughly 15,000 chats this month, and in the fact that the company running it is fundamentally against the kind of verification that three governments have now forced on it anyway.

Most articles answering this question are working from guesswork or from each other. Everything below is taken from Janitor's own newsroom posts, its help center and its public changelog, all dated, because the company publishes more about its own incidents than almost anyone else in this category. That transparency is itself part of the answer.

Is Janitor AI safe to use?

For an adult in the United States, yes, with two caveats worth understanding before you commit. Janitor keeps your chats private by default, does not sell personal data, and has been unusually open about its own failures. The caveats are that your conversation may leave Janitor entirely depending on which model you use, and that the platform's memory system has been unreliable recently.

The first caveat is structural. Janitor has always let you connect an external model through a proxy, meaning you paste an API key from OpenAI or OpenRouter and your messages go to that provider. When you do that, Janitor's privacy policy stops being the one that governs your chat. The provider's does. Deleting your Janitor account does not reach into that provider's logs. Does Janitor AI require ID verification?

Not in the United States, and Janitor has said it has no plans to change that. Age verification applies only to users connecting from IP addresses in Australia, Brazil and the United Kingdom. It rolled out in Australia and Brazil on 24 April 2026 and in the UK on 15 June 2026. If you are anywhere else, Janitor's help center is explicit that your experience is completely unchanged.

That makes Janitor one of the few large platforms in this category where a US adult still gets in without proving anything. Why does Janitor AI ask some users to verify their age?

Because three governments made it a legal requirement and the alternative was blocking those countries entirely. Australia's Age-Restricted Material Codes under the Online Safety Act 2021 took effect on 9 March 2026. Brazil's Digital ECA, Lei No. 15.211/2025, took effect on 17 March 2026. The UK's Online Safety Act 2023 covers the third region.

The numbers explain the decision. Janitor said non-compliance would have meant fines of up to $35 million in Australia, $9.5 million in Brazil or £18 million in the UK, plus potential blocking orders. Its announcement was blunt about how it felt: "we are fundamentally against KYC for social media and always have been," and the choice was framed as verification or cutting those users off. This is the pattern behind almost every age gate that appeared in 2026, and it is why operators in regulated categories increasingly need to keep track of which obligations actually apply to them and what satisfies each one rather than reacting a month before a deadline.

What happens to your ID if you do have to verify?

Less than you would expect, and this is the part Janitor got right. Verification runs through k-ID, the same provider Discord, Twitch and Snapchat use. Janitor receives only a yes or no answer on whether you are over 18. Nothing else. Your ID or selfie data is never linked to your Janitor account, and detection of where you are is IP based only, with no GPS and no physical address.

Compared with the alternatives in this market, that is a good design. On-device facial estimation with nothing uploaded is meaningfully more private than shipping a photo of your driver's license to a vendor that keeps it for a retention window. Does Janitor AI save your chats?

Yes, your chats are stored on your account, and they are private by default. Nobody else can see a conversation unless you deliberately publish it, which is a manual, optional setting. Janitor does not sell personal data or share private conversations with third parties for advertising. Staff access is limited to the ordinary exceptions: moderation, security, support and legal requirements.

The honest qualifier is the proxy route again. If you route a chat through an external provider, a copy of that exchange exists in that provider's systems under their retention rules, and no setting inside Janitor reaches it. Two different privacy policies apply to one conversation, and only one of them is Janitor's.

How reliable is Janitor AI's memory?

It broke badly in August 2026, and Janitor documented the whole thing publicly. A chat memory experiment that was meant for a small test group leaked out and affected everyone. Under the experiment, once a memory was saved, the messages it covered stopped being sent with the prompt, so companions began forgetting things they should have remembered. A related bug meant deleting a message also wiped the memory covering it, which hit around 15,000 chats between 18 and 20 August.

Janitor restored the memories on those chats, fixed the delete behavior so it never touches memory again, and corrected its own earlier statement that the data was unrecoverable. Its changelog put it this way: "yesterday we said lost memory wasn't recoverable, we were wrong about that in the right direction." Memories created after 18 August that had already been overwritten could not be brought back.

Two fair readings of that. The unflattering one is that an experiment escaped its test group and damaged real users' data on a live platform. The flattering one is that almost nobody else in this category would have written it up at all, let alone published a correction against themselves. The same changelog also records a moderation pipeline outage on 10 August and character search downtime on 24 August, which tells you the platform is under real strain, and tells you they are not hiding it.

Can you delete your Janitor AI account?

Yes, and since 13 August 2026 deletion has a 30 day restore window rather than being instant and final. That is a genuine improvement for anyone who has ever deleted something in a bad moment, though it is worth knowing that during those 30 days the data still exists. If your goal is immediate erasure rather than a reversible exit, that window is a change you should factor in.

As with everything else here, deletion covers Janitor's own systems. Chats you ran through an external model provider are not in scope, because they were never Janitor's data to delete.

Is paying for Janitor AI safe?

The subscription itself is straightforward, but check the price before you buy, because the figure most search results show you is wrong. Janitor's paid tier is called janitor+ and it is $12.99 a month, announced in the company's own newsroom on 24 June 2026. A large number of review sites list a $9.99 tier called Pro that does not appear in any Janitor announcement we could find.

The bigger financial consideration is that the subscription is a floor rather than a ceiling. Since 30 July 2026, janitor+ subscribers can use Router, which bills premium third party models per token from a wallet. That is convenient, and it is genuinely cheaper than some proxy setups, but it means your monthly total moves with your usage. Who should use Janitor AI, and who should not

Use it if you want a huge library of user made characters, you enjoy configuring models and prompts, and you would rather have control than defaults. On those terms it is one of the best products in the category and the free tier is generous enough to evaluate properly.

Look elsewhere if you want one consistent companion who reliably remembers your life, a bill you can predict, and a setup you never have to tune. Those are the three things Janitor is structurally worst at: character platforms are built for variety rather than continuity, memory has been the platform's weak point this month, and token billing does not give you a fixed number. Whichever way you go, the single most useful habit is to check where your conversation is being processed. On Janitor that is a setting you control, and most people never look at it.
