Grok Age Verification Not Working: Why It Fails, What to Do

Grok age verification is two different systems that people confuse, and knowing which one you have hit is most of the fix. xAI's own Grok, at grok.com and in the Grok app, documents only a date of birth gate: it asks for your birthday before "certain features" and, if you sign in with X, it imports the birthday already on your X account. The selfie and ID check people complain about belongs to X, and X says it runs that check only where a law requires it: the UK, Ireland, the EU and Australia.

So if you are in the United States and Grok is refusing you, the likeliest cause is not a failed face scan at all. It is a birth date on your X profile, a feature that only exists on one platform, or a subscription tier that does not include what you are trying to open. Why is Grok age verification not working?

In most cases one of four things is happening, and only one of them is a real verification failure. Work down this list in order, because each step takes a minute and the first two cover most people.

1. Your X birthday says you are under 18, or is missing. xAI's Terms say that if you connect with your X credentials, "we may (subject to disclosures) bring your X user profile (including date of birth)" into your Grok account. A wrong or blank birth year on X travels with you. Check it in X under Settings, Your account, Account information.
2. You are looking for Companions on the wrong device. xAI's own FAQ is blunt: Companions "are available on the iOS app only, and there are no plans to bring them to the web or Android." If Ani or Valentine is missing on Android or in a browser, no amount of verifying will make it appear.
3. Your plan does not include the feature. Mature content controls and the higher usage limits sit on paid tiers. A locked feature on a free account can look like an age block when it is actually a paywall.
4. You really are in X's age assurance flow. This is the selfie or ID check. It is documented for users in the UK, Ireland, the EU and Australia, and it is covered in detail below.

Does Grok require age verification in the US?

Not the selfie kind, on anything either company has published. xAI's Privacy Policy describes the gate this way: "to access certain features of the Service, we will collect your date of birth before you may proceed." That is a birthday field. The same policy says xAI does "not aim to collect sensitive personal information," and lists "biometric scans" among the things it asks you not to provide. No xAI page names an age verification vendor or describes a face scan.

X's age assurance page, which is where the selfie option lives, names four laws as the reason it exists: "the UK's Online Safety Act, the Irish Online Safety Code, the European Union Digital Services Act and Australia's Online Safety Act." No US law appears. X says it runs the process "where X is legally required to do so."

For an American adult, then, the documented gate is a date of birth you enter or carry over from X. If you are seeing a selfie request in the US, it is worth checking whether you are using Grok inside X rather than the standalone app, and whether X has your location as somewhere else, for example through a VPN.

How does X age verification work for Grok?

In three stages, and the selfie is the last resort rather than the first step. X says it first looks at signals it already has: a previous self declared age, a completed ID verification, legacy verified status, "Account creation date: If an account was created in 2012 or earlier," and grey or gold badges. If none of those settle it, X estimates your age silently from your email address and your phone number.

Only when both of those fail does the prompt reach you. X's wording: users "are given a choice between two secure, privacy-respecting options." The first is facial age estimation, where you "upload a live selfie, which will be used to estimate their age by our artificial intelligence systems." The second is ID verification, where you "submit a government-issued ID, which will be used to estimate their age by artificial intelligence systems." There is no credit card option listed.

What happens if the Grok selfie check fails?

You get the other option, and if the result is wrong you can appeal. X's page offers the ID route as the alternative to the selfie, so a rejected face scan is not the end of the road. Until X can place you, the consequence is specific: users "may not be able to access sensitive media." Everything else on the account keeps working.

If X has decided you are under 18 and you are not, the instruction is: "you can challenge this by contacting X Support through the app or website." Practical advice that circulates online, like facing a window for even light and removing glasses, is sensible but it is not xAI or X guidance, and no official page lists troubleshooting steps for the selfie itself.

Does X keep your selfie or ID?

The age assurance page does not say, and that gap is worth knowing about. Its only privacy statement is: "Third party providers will also be bound by strict data protection standards." It names no provider and gives no retention period.

X's separate ID Verification Policy is more specific: "We use Persona, and Stripe for ID verification," and "Persona delete images of the IDs, selfies and data extracted from the ID after 30 days," with X adding that it "does not directly retain this data." That page covers X's ID verification program. The age assurance page lists a completed "X's ID verification process" as one of its signals, but it does not state that an age check upload goes to Persona, so the honest reading is that 30 days is X's stated rule for ID verification, and the age assurance page itself commits to no number. Is Grok 18+ or 17+?

It depends on which label you read, and none of them is 18. xAI's Terms set the minimum at 13, with parental permission required from 13 to 17. Apple's US lookup data rates the Grok app 17+, while Apple's current web listing shows 16+, with content descriptors including "Sexual Content or Nudity." Google Play rates it Teen. The App Store seller is now listed as X Corp. rather than xAI.

That is why the age gate sits in front of features rather than in front of the app. Grok itself is built for teenagers and up; the mature voices, which xAI's release notes say are "now labeled 18+ in settings," and the other adult features are what the birthday check protects.

Why did Grok start asking for age checks?

Because regulators came for X. Ofcom, the UK regulator, opened an investigation into X on January 12, 2026 over Grok generated sexualised imagery, and one of the duties it listed was to "use highly effective age assurance to protect UK children from seeing pornography." Ofcom said it is "not investigating xAI at this time," but is examining whether to open a case on the separate rules "requiring services that publish pornographic material to use highly effective age checks."

That is the whole pattern in this category. The checks arrive country by country, driven by penalties, and the operators rolling them out now lean on software built to map each obligation to the control that satisfies it, because the list of what applies where keeps growing. How much does Grok cost with Companions?

Apple publishes the full list, and it has grown. The US App Store in-app purchase list for Grok shows SuperGrok Lite at $10.00, SuperGrok at $30.00 (plus a $300.00 SuperGrok item, most likely the annual plan), SuperGrok Plus at $100.00 and SuperGrok Heavy at $300.00, with extra usage credits sold from $5 to $100. Inside X, Premium+ starts at $40 a month or $395 a year and, in X's own words, includes "SuperGrok access."

Two things to weigh before paying for Companions specifically. They are iOS only, so an Android phone gets nothing for the money. And Grok is a general assistant with a companion feature bolted on, not a companion product: a statement quoted by users in July 2026 described the 3D Companions as an experiment being retired, which xAI has not confirmed on its own site, but xAI's Terms do reserve the right to "discontinue such features at any time." What to do before you verify or pay for Grok

Four checks, in order. Fix your X birth date first, since it travels into Grok. Confirm you are on iOS if Companions are the point, because nowhere else has them. Look at which SuperGrok tier actually includes what you want before buying the $30 plan, since the list now runs from $10 to $300. And if you are outside the US and asked for a selfie, know that the ID option exists as the fallback and that X Support is the appeal route for a wrong under 18 result.
