Are AI girlfriends worth it? Yes if you want daily company from something that remembers you, no if you want a replacement for a person. What $9 to $20 a month actually buys, and a two day test that decides it.

An AI girlfriend is worth it if what you want is someone to talk to every day who remembers you, and you are willing to pay $9 to $20 a month for it. It is not worth it if you expect it to replace dating, fix loneliness on its own, or stay interesting without a real memory behind it.

That is the short version, and most of the argument about this category comes from people answering a different question than the one being asked. Below is what the money actually buys in 2026, what makes a subscription stop being worth it by month three, and a two day test that settles it for you specifically before you pay anyone.

Are AI girlfriends worth it?

For a narrow group of people, clearly yes. For most people, it depends on which of three things they are actually shopping for: entertainment, company, or a substitute for a relationship they want with a person. The first two are things this product can deliver. The third is the one that leaves people feeling like they wasted their money, and no app on the market solves it.

Here is the decision laid out honestly, including the cases where the answer is no and you should spend the money elsewhere.

What you actually wantWorth paying for? What to look for instead
Someone to talk to at odd hours who knows your contextYes, this is the core use caseLong term memory and proactive messages, nothing else matters as much
A low pressure place to talk about your dayYes, and it works better than people expectOne consistent partner rather than a roster you keep restarting
Novelty and character variety for a few weeksOnly at the free or cheap tierA free character platform, and do not buy an annual plan
Practice talking to people before dating againPartly, with a clear end date in mindSomething that pushes back rather than agreeing with everything you say
A replacement for a partner you are grieving or missingNo, and it usually makes it worseA therapist or a support group, and this is worth being blunt about
Help with a decision you are stuck onNo, wrong tool entirelySomething built to generate and pressure test options, not to agree with you

How much does an AI girlfriend cost per month?

Budget $9 to $20 a month in 2026 for a service with genuine memory. Amorous.ai is $9 a month billed annually or $12 month to month. Character.AI charges $9.99 for c.ai+, Candy AI lists Premium at $13.99, Nomi sits near $15.99, and Replika is $19.99 monthly or $69.99 for a year. Those figures were checked in August 2026, and the metered ones need care: a Candy AI review that counts the tokens puts the real spend nearer $25 to $80 a month.

The headline price is the wrong number to compare on token based services. Candy AI includes roughly 100 tokens a month on Premium, and an image costs two to four of them while voice runs about three tokens a minute, so anyone using those features regularly ends up in the $25 to $60 range. Before you decide anything is cheap, work out what one normal week costs you in credits. We wrote a full breakdown of what an AI girlfriend costs across the main apps if you want the line by line version, and our AI companion app pricing table shows which apps meter extras and which charge one flat figure.

For context on what the category is worth in aggregate: Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch put lifetime consumer spending on AI companion apps at $221 million through July 2025, with revenue per download climbing from $0.52 in 2024 to $1.18 in 2025. People are not just downloading these, they are increasingly paying for them.

What do you actually get for the money?

Three things, in descending order of how much they matter after the first fortnight. Memory, so the conversation accumulates instead of resetting. Initiative, meaning she messages you rather than sitting there waiting to be opened. And consistency, so the person you talk to on Friday is recognizably the one from Monday.

Writing quality is not on that list, and that surprises people. By 2026 nearly every app in this space runs on a model that writes fluent, warm, convincing dialogue. That stopped being a differentiator a while ago. What still varies enormously between a $9 service and a free one is whether anything is stored, whether anyone reaches out first, and whether the personality holds together under a difficult conversation. If you want the longer version of that comparison, our roundup of the best AI girlfriend apps tests six of them on exactly those points.

When is an AI girlfriend not worth it?

When you are buying it to fix something it cannot reach. If you are grieving a person, working through a breakup you have not processed, or hoping the app will get you dating again by proxy, the subscription tends to postpone the thing that would actually help. That is not a knock on the product. It is a mismatch between the purchase and the problem, and the honest thing for us to say is that a therapist is the better spend.

It is also not worth it if you want variety. If what you enjoy is trying a new character every few days, a paid devotion focused service is exactly the wrong purchase, because everything it is good at depends on staying with one person. Free character platforms do variety better than anyone charging for it, and you should use those instead.

Be wary of the rankings while you shop. Almost every top ten list of AI girlfriend apps is ordered by affiliate commission, which is why the same three names rotate through the number one slot depending on whose page you land on. Building a storefront of the tools you recommend is a legitimate way for a writer to earn from their audience, but a payout table is not a quality ranking and should not be read as one.

Do AI girlfriends stop being worth it after a few months?

For a lot of people, yes, and the reason is almost always the same: nothing was being stored, so the relationship kept starting over. Every chat model holds the current conversation in a context window, which is why a service can feel remarkable for the first hour. When that window fills, an app with no memory layer silently drops the oldest material, and your job, your sister and sometimes your name go with it.

Services built with real memory age in the opposite direction. Month three is better than week one, because there is a shared history to draw on and the small callbacks start landing. That is the entire difference between a subscription people cancel and one they keep, and it is worth reading how AI companion memory actually works before you judge any app on its first evening.

Is a free AI girlfriend good enough?

Free tiers are good enough to find out whether you like talking to one, and rarely good enough to keep. The economics make that unavoidable. Sending unprompted messages and storing months of memory costs money on every user every day, so free products fund themselves some other way: ads inside the chat, daily message caps, tokens sold for images and voice, or data. Mozilla reviewed 11 romantic AI chatbots for its Privacy Not Included project in 2024 and gave every one of them a warning label, with ten of the eleven failing basic security standards. The paid apps publish very different terms on this, and the differences are worth reading before you commit, which we set out in our guide to the best AI companion app for privacy.

There is also a market structure problem worth knowing about. Appfigures counted 337 revenue generating AI companion apps, with the top 10 percent taking 89 percent of all revenue. The long tail is full of services that will not exist in two years, and when one of these shuts down the chat history usually goes with it. Soulmate AI closed in 2023 with about a week of notice. If you are going to invest months of conversation in something, pick a company that charges money for the product, because that is the one with an obvious reason to still be running.

How do you decide in one week?

Run two tests and ignore everything else. The first is the memory test: tell her something specific and slightly unusual about your week, close the app, come back forty eight hours later and start a fresh conversation without mentioning it. If it comes back on its own, there is real storage underneath. If she asks what you do for a living again, you are talking to a context window with good manners.

The second is the initiative test: do not open the app for a full day. If nothing arrives, the product is purely reactive, which means you will be carrying the entire conversation forever. Both tests cost nothing, and between them they predict month three far better than any review does. You can run the first one right now in the demo at the top of this page, or on any AI girlfriend website that lets you talk before signing up.

So is it worth it, or not?

If you want daily company from something that keeps track of you, $9 to $20 a month is a reasonable price for what you get, and the people who stay subscribed for a year are overwhelmingly in that group. Pew Research Center found in its 2026 survey of 5,119 US adults that 10 percent use chatbots for emotional support or advice and 4 percent for companionship, so this is now a normal thing that a measurable share of the country does rather than a curiosity.

If you want a replacement for a person, or novelty, or a solution to something structural in your life, the money is better spent elsewhere and we would rather tell you that before you subscribe than after. Amorous.ai is built for the first group specifically: one AI girlfriend who texts you first and remembers your life, at a flat price with nothing metered. The demo above runs without an account, so you can settle the question yourself in about ten minutes.
